Association of PFN1 Gene Polymorphisms with Bone Mineral Density, Bone Turnover Markers, and Osteoporotic Fractures in Chinese Population
This study was performed to investigate the association of Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in thePFN1 gene with Bone Mineral Density (BMD) as well as bone turnover markers and osteoporotic fractures in Chinese subjects. A total of 2836 unrelated Chinese subjects comprising 1247 healthy subjects and 1589 osteoporotic fractures patients (Fracture group) were enrolled in this study. Seven tagSNPs (rs117337116, rs238243, rs6559, rs238242, rs78224458, rs4790714, and rs13204) of thePFN1 gene were genotyped. The BMD of the lumbar spine 1 –4 (L1-4), femoral neck, and total hip as well as bone turnover markers, such as β-...

Zoledronate Promotes Peri-Implant Osteogenesis in Diabetic Osteoporosis by the AMPK Pathway
In conclusion, the ability of ZOL to promote osteogenesis in DOP by targeting AMPK signaling suggests that therapy with ZOL, particularly simultaneous local and systemic administration, may be a unique approach for future implant repair in diabetes patients. (Source: Calcified Tissue International)

Physical Functioning in Patients with a Recent Fracture: The “Can Do, Do Do” Framework Applied to Explore Physical Capacity, Physical Activity and Fall Risk Factors
AbstractPhysical capacity (PC) and physical activity (PA) are associated physical performance measures, and combined, PC and PA are used to categorize physical performance in the “can do, do do” framework. We aimed to explore physical performance of patients attending the fracture liaison service (FLS). In this cross-sectional study, PC was measured by 6-min-walking-test (can’t do/can do) and PA by accelerometer (don’t do/do do). Following quadrants were defined base d on predefined cut-off scores for poor performance: (1) “can’t do, don’t do”; (2) “can do, don’t do”; (3) “can’t do, do do”; (4) ...

A Case of Hypercalcemia from PTHrP-Producing Fibromyxoid Sarcoma Responsive to Glucocorticoid Therapy
We report a case of PTHrP-induced hypercalcemia due to a malignancy —low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma—that responded to glucocorticoid treatment. This is the first report of glucocorticoids controlling PTHrP-mediated hypercalcemia of malignancy. Immunohistochemistry of the surgical pathology localized PTHrP staining to the vascular endothelial cells within the tumo r. Further studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism of glucocorticoid action in the treatment of PTHrP-mediated hypercalcemia of malignancy. (Source: Calcified Tissue International)

Alteration of Volumetric Bone Mineral Density Parameters in Men with Spinal Cord Injury
The objectives were to: (i) determine the effects of SCI on areal BMD (aBMD) and vBMD determined by advanced 3D-DXA-based methods at various femoral regions and (ii) model the profiles of 3D-DXA-derived parameters with the time since injury. Eighty adult males with SCI and 25 age-matched able-bodied (AB) controls were enrolled in this study. Trabecular and cortical vBMD, cortical thickness and derived strength parameters were assessed by 3D-SHAPER ® software at various femoral subregions. Individuals with SCI had significantly lower integral vBMD, trabecular vBMD, cortical vBMD, cortical thickness and derived bone strengt...
