Contact burns in the elderly: Do we need a campaign of prevention?
We wish to bring attention to an area where we feel the burns surgeon meets one of the biggest challenges of the future of healthcare; the ageing population. (Source: Burns : Journal of the International Society for Burn Injuries)

Cultural adaptation and validation of Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale for Turkish use
Clinical evaluation is an important phase of general patient follow-up. Besides physical examination and other complementary imaging modalities, scales that patients themselves interpret are becoming increasingly popular [1,2]. In addition to assessing treatment efficacy, these scales are beneficial to clinicians because they provide data that can help in treatment planning on the basis of the degree of impairment of the patient ’s functioning [3]. Cultural adaptation of scales is an important issue. (Source: Burns : Journal of the International Society for Burn Injuries)

Chemical burn assaults: Is the media coverage representative?
Over the last year there has been a noticeable increase in the media coverage of chemical assaults within the United Kingdom (UK). The media portrays a bleak picture to the public of increased severity and frequency of these attacks with potentially severely disfiguring consequences. Understandably there has been a public outcry for tighter regulations. At the time of writing, simply searching ‘acid attack UK’ in Google produces numerous articles from recent months. Figures from the BBC suggest dramatic rises in the number of corrosive substance attacks across the UK in the last 5 years [1] and the Mirror recently desc...

Use of bilaminar grafts as life-saving interventions for severe burns: A single-center experience
Severe burns provoke devastating injuries associated with elevated short-term mortality and long-term morbidity rates. Moreover, they comprise a significant proportion of healthcare resources when compared with other traumatic and acute care hospitalizations [1]. Of the many factors responsible for poor outcomes, wound coverage plays a critical role in patients ’ prognosis. Limited, and sometimes inexistent, donor sites have urged surgeons and scientists to develop various techniques for grafting of large-sized burn victims [2]. Genital burns in the United States: Disproportionate prevalence in the pediatric population
Burns are an uncommon source of injury to the genitalia and perineum but can have debilitating physical, psychological and reproductive consequences. Certain characteristics of male and female genitalia provide capacity to resist injuries. Anatomic location of the perineum as well as coverage by clothing make the exposure to the causative agents less probable [1 –3]. C-reactive protein response patterns after antibiotic treatment among children with scalds
Scalds are the most common types of burn in children, both in developed and developing countries [1,2]. In Sweden they are one of the most common causes of accidents among children up to the age of 3 years and are associated with the longest duration of hospital stay [3], and considerable health care costs. Boys are more likely to be injured than girls, and similar figures have been reported worldwide [4 –11]. The main causes involve pulling down receptacles from tables and benches, or overturning containers of hot water. (Source: Burns : Journal of the International Society for Burn Injuries)

Post burn pruritus in pediatric burn patients
Burns are a major public health concern, in particular in the developing world. Over 95% of fatal burn injuries occur in low- and middle-income countries [1]. While flame injuries are the main cause of burns in the adult population, children and especially toddlers are at higher risk of hot water burns. These burns account for approximately 5% of all burn deaths but account for a much higher proportion of non-fatal burns [2,3]. The survivors have to cope with problems such as disfigurements and pruritus (itch). (Source: Burns : Journal of the International Society for Burn Injuries)

Optimizing mass casualty burns intensive care organization and treatment using evidence-based outcome predictors
With increasing unrest in the world, trauma as a disease is an increasingly common entity [1]. Mass burns injuries (MBI) can place an extreme burden on the healthcare system of a country due to its high demand for nursing and medical care [2]. Much of the literature at present focuses on pre-hospital management of mass casualty events in recent history. There is a paucity of literature focusing on strategizing the use of intensive care units (ICU) in available in hospitals for mass casualty incidents (MCI) especially with regards to MBI.
