"Dark patterns": manipulative design strategies in digital health applications
This article provides an overview of current and widespread dark patterns and assesses the risks posed by them in digital health applications. In the future, "light" should be shed on dark patterns by creating more transparency for users, providing regulators with a more accurate understanding of dark patterns, and paying more attention to the implementation of guidelines. Thus, users may gain autonomy using healthcare applications and their data can be better protected.PMID:38332141 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-024-03840-6 (Source: Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundheitsforschung, Gesundheitsschutz)

Digitally supported participation in the nexus between public health and urban planning
This article explores how digital technologies enable participation among residents and stakeholders in order to support the health-oriented planning of cities and neighborhoods. From the selective case studies presented in the paper, it can be ascertained that digital technologies can support various forms of participation by enabling different levels of engagement as well as both one-way and two-way interactions. Some forms of engagement can be supported entirely within digital platforms. However, in the case of higher engagement, which requires deeper insights into the problems and the codevelopment of solutions, other ...

Mis- and disinformation in social media: mitigating risks in digital health communication
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2024 Feb 8. doi: 10.1007/s00103-024-03836-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMisinformation and disinformation in social media have become a challenge for effective public health measures. Here, we examine factors that influence believing and sharing false information, both misinformation and disinformation, at individual, social, and contextual levels and discuss intervention possibilities. At the individual level, knowledge deficits, lack of skills, and emotional motivation have been associated with believing in false information. Lower health literacy, a conspi...

Digital technologies in nursing-what can they achieve?
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2024 Feb 7. doi: 10.1007/s00103-024-03843-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDigital care technologies are becoming increasingly important in long-term care. They encompass all technologies that change processes and products by means of networking and/or sensor technology and include artificial intelligence, that is, processes, methods, and algorithms for learning by means of data and enabling meaningful decisions based on this. Their application ranges from the promotion of professional collaboration, control and management, knowledge acquisition and transfer, i...

Digital health literacy in Germany: current status, concepts, and challenges
This article examines the discussions about digital health literacy, the existing studies and measurement tools used in them, the data situation in Germany, and current challenges.DHL consists of various sub-competencies that reflect current digital information behavior, opportunities, and risks. The data situation is very heterogeneous due to different study designs and instruments, which limits the informative value. Two representative studies, HLS-Ger‑2 by Bielefeld University and the study by AOK Rheinland/Hamburg and the Leibniz-WissenschaftsCampus, both indicate a high proportion of people with low DHL despite diff...

Digital technologies to improve mental health
This article begins with an overview of the functions and range of applications of digital technologies for mental health. The evidence for individual digital forms of interventions is addressed. Overall, it is shown that digital interventions for mental health are likely to be cost-effective compared to no therapy or a non-therapeutic control group. Newer approaches such as "digital phenotyping" are explained in the article. Finally, individual papers from the "Leibniz ScienceCampus Digital Public Health" are presented, and limitations and challenges of technologies for mental health are discussed.PMID:38294700 | DOI:10.1...

Social inequality in the context of digital health applications: digital divides in access, use, effectiveness, and privacy
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2024 Jan 30. doi: 10.1007/s00103-024-03832-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGiven the massive increase in digital health tools, the question about the impact of these tools on health equity has gained importance. The aim of this narrative review is to discuss the extent and central aspects of the digital divide. To illustrate the extent of the digital divide, we draw on data from the Liter@te study, which interviewed low-literacy individuals regarding their use of digital health tools and their digital health literacy. The results of the Liter@te study are comp...

Perspectives of a  sample of mostly younger doctors on physician-assisted suicide
CONCLUSION: Younger doctors differentiate in their attitude towards PAS between people without illnesses and those in palliative treatment situations. Further investigations into the causes of the frequent ignorance of the normative foundations are necessary. The results suggest that more educational work needs to be done about suicide alternatives and palliative care options.PMID:38253871 | PMC:PMC10834612 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-024-03833-5 (Source: Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundheitsforschung, Gesundheitsschutz)

Health and climate change-what is the potential of real-world data?
This article addresses the question of how climate change may affect health and to what extent real-world data can contribute to research in this topic area. Climate change is altering the environmental and living conditions of humankind, and has thus also become a relevant health problem. The increase in extreme weather events, changes in exposure to UV and air pollution, and the climate-associated spread of allergens or novel pathogens are significantly changing the spectrum of diseases and the need for medical care in the population. However, in Germany, only few findings on the consequences for the healthcare system an...

Re-identification potential of structured health data
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2024 Feb;67(2):164-170. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03820-2. Epub 2024 Jan 17.ABSTRACTBroad access to health data offers great potential for science and research. However, health data often contains sensitive information that must be protected in a special way. In this context, the article deals with the re-identification potential of health data. After defining the relevant terms, we discuss factors that influence the re-identification potential. We summarize international privacy standards for health data and highlight the importance of background knowledge. Give...

The application of real-world evidence in drug regulatory decision-making
This article provides an overview of current applications of RWE in drug regulatory decision-making processes. The potentials of RWE along with the hurdles to be addressed are described and examples of current projects on RWE research for drug regulation are given. The work is based on current international literature as well as examples from international and European initiatives and regulatory practice, which aim to support an increased use of RWD/RWE in regulatory decision-making processes. In order to be able to utilise the potential of RWE even more in the future, it is important to make relevant RWD sources more read...

Establishment of the new "Health Data Lab" to provide data for science
This article begins by highlighting the advantages of the HDL and outlining the opportunities that the RWD offers for research in healthcare and for the population. The structure and central aspects of the HDL are explained afterwards. An outlook on the opportunities of linking different data is given. What the application and data usage processes at the HDL will look like is illustrated using the example of fictitious possibilities for analysing long COVID based on the routine data available at the HDL in the future.PMID:38214724 | PMC:PMC10834602 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-023-03831-z (Source: Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundhei...
