Comparison of diagnostic data after introduction of cystic fibrosis screening in newborns in Germany
DISCUSSION: The DGNS and the DMR, each with different strengths in the documentation of screening (DGNS) and diagnostic data (DMR), provide important clues for the number of newly diagnosed cystic fibrosis patients after the introduction of NGS. Legal requirements for tracking those screened, recording all children with CF, and exchanging data between the DGNS and DMR could improve evaluation in the future.PMID:37831094 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-023-03778-1 (Source: Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundheitsforschung, Gesundheitsschutz)

Environmental risks and health literacy: a  systematic review
DISCUSSION: The heterogeneous operationalizations impede the comparability of the studies. Future work should target the standardization of methodological aspects. Overall, it appears that interventions such as trainings were conducive to improving HL or EHL. In practice, this should therefore be given greater focus in order to increase HL or EHL.PMID:37823907 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-023-03782-5 (Source: Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundheitsforschung, Gesundheitsschutz)

Development of analytics in newborn screening-from the Guthrie card to genetics
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2023 Oct 12. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03774-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFor more than five decades, all newborns in Germany have been offered a screening examination for the early detection of congenital treatable diseases. Since its inception, about 35 million children have been screened in this way.Originally, screening exams only included early detection of phenylketonuria, which, without timely treatment, would lead to mental retardation that could no longer be corrected. The bacteriological Guthrie test allowed the detection of elevated concentrations ...

Newborn blood spot screening (NBS) in Germany : Status quo and presentation of a  concept for further development
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2023 Oct 10. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03771-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNewborn screening from dried blood spots (NBS) is a highly effective secondary prevention measure that has been established for many years. Against the background of the inclusion of "new diseases" that meet the screening criteria, a concept for the further advancement of NBS was developed on behalf of the GKV-Spitzenverband. This was based on a systematic literature review and a survey of the status quo of NBS in Germany using quantitative and qualitative methods. It is essential for th...

Evaluation and optimization of newborn screening by structured long-term follow-up-using the example of inherited metabolic diseases
This article explains the importance of long-term follow-up for the evaluation and continuous optimization of the screening. Long-term clinical outcomes of people with inherited metabolic diseases identified by NBS are presented as examples.PMID:37815612 | DOI:10.1007/s00103-023-03772-7 (Source: Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundheitsforschung, Gesundheitsschutz)

The Ontario Newborn Screening Program: A  novel referral center model
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2023 Oct 4. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03786-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNewborn screening (NBS) for inherited and congenital disorders is a form of secondary disease prevention and a public health responsibility. The development of NBS programs is one of the most important achievements in health care. While the scope of the screening targets has expanded and methods have evolved, the screening process has remained essentially unchanged. In 2006, the Canadian province of Ontario implemented a new provincial NBS program that differs from conventional programs. ...
