Early iron supplementation in exclusively breastfed Gambian infants: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: In exclusively breastfed Gambian infants, iron supplementation from 6 weeks of age was associated with a significant improvement in markers of iron status at around 6 months of age. There was no indication of adverse effects on growth or infections.PMID:38420570 | PMC:PMC10898279 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.23.289942 (Source: Bulletin of the World Health Organization)

Using adult care visits to diagnose HIV infection in children, Burkina Faso
CONCLUSION: Testing HIV-exposed children through their mothers in outpatient clinics is feasible and effective in a low HIV-prevalence setting such as Burkina Faso. Implementation of this strategy to detect undiagnosed HIV-infected children is recommended.PMID:38420571 | PMC:PMC10898281 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.23.289606 (Source: Bulletin of the World Health Organization)

Tuberculosis contact tracing, Angola
CONCLUSION: Contact tracing increased the diagnosis of tuberculosis although engagement with the programme was low and loss to follow-up was high. Participation increased during community DOT. Community-based screening should be explored to improve participation and diagnosis.PMID:38420572 | PMC:PMC10898286 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.23.290068 (Source: Bulletin of the World Health Organization)

Effectiveness of greenhouse gas mitigation intervention for health-care systems: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: There are opportunities to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from health-care systems in low- and middle-income countries, but gaps in evidence were identified across sources of emissions, such as the supply chain, as well as a lack of consideration of interactions with adaptation goals. As efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas intensify, rigorous monitoring, evaluation and reporting of these efforts are needed. Such actions will contribute to a strong evidence base that can inform policy-makers across contexts.PMID:38420573 | PMC:PMC10898283 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.23.290464 (Source: Bulletin of the World Health Organization)

Machine learning in health financing: benefits, risks and regulatory needs
Bull World Health Organ. 2024 Mar 1;102(3):216-224. doi: 10.2471/BLT.23.290333. Epub 2023 Dec 8.ABSTRACTThere is increasing use of machine learning for the health financing functions (revenue raising, pooling and purchasing), yet evidence lacks for its effects on the universal health coverage (UHC) objectives. This paper provides a synopsis of the use cases of machine learning and their potential benefits and risks. The assessment reveals that the various use cases of machine learning for health financing have the potential to affect all the UHC intermediate objectives - the equitable distribution of resources (both positi...
