Physical fitness in male adolescents and atherosclerosis in middle age: a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSION: This study supports that a combination of high cardiorespiratory fitness and high muscular strength in adolescence is associated with lower coronary atherosclerosis, particularly severe coronary stenosis, almost 40 years later.PMID:38355280 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2023-107663 (Source: British Journal of Sports Medicine)

Incidence of injury and illness at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games held in a closed-loop environment: a prospective cohort study of 7332 athlete days
CONCLUSION: The incidence of both injury and illness at the Beijing 2022 Games were the lowest yet reported in the Paralympic Winter Games. The incidence of injury was highest in alpine skiing. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing vigilance and continued injury risk mitigation strategies to safeguard the well-being of athletes in these high-risk competitions. Respiratory illnesses were most commonly reported in Nordic skiing, which included the three cases of COVID-19 recorded at the games.PMID:38346775 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2023-107525 (Source: British Journal of Sports Medicine)

Exploring the association between cognitive activity and symptom resolution following concussion in adolescents aged 11-17 years
CONCLUSION: In adolescents with concussion, more moderate-high intensity cognitive activity is associated with faster symptom resolution, and a delayed return to school is associated with slower symptom resolution. However, these relationships may be bidirectional and do not necessarily imply causality. Randomised controlled trials are needed to determine if exposure to early cognitive activity can promote concussion recovery in adolescents.PMID:38346776 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2023-107601 (Source: British Journal of Sports Medicine)

Unrecognised coach: medical professionals and their impact on student-athlete success beyond athletics
Everyone’s path in life looks different. The road that leads them to achieve their version of success is unique. What did mine look like? An oval with eight lanes that required spikes to tread upon. Fourteen years of 0600 wakeups, practices that I nearly passed out from, and competitions where tensions were thick enough to cut with a butter knife. I was tunnel visioned to sprint my way to fame and fortune. That vision became obscure, however, after a series of injuries that went from bad to worse. Every year, I sprained, strained, rolled or stressed something in my body. Hip bursitis, ‘jumper’s knee&rsquo...

Jamie Kissick: a champion for concussion education and Para sport
In this Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM) issue, it seems only fitting to publish a Service Spotlight on Dr Jamie Kissick (figure 1), who passed away a year ago. Jamie was a well-known, well-loved member of the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) community in Canada and worldwide. He was an active, engaged member of CASEM, serving on the Board and as president of this organisation. He was passionate about sport-related concussion (SRC) and Para sport and contributed significantly to the development of clinical care paradigms and research in both of these areas throughout his career. Jamie obtained his m...

Injury prevention and health protection strategy in Cameroon University athletes (PhD Academy Award)
What did I do? The aim of my PhD was to investigate musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses in Cameroon University athletes in order to inform prevention strategies and rehabilitation measures. Like other sport competitions worldwide, the Cameroon University Games (CUG) was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the economic, infrastructural, educational and social realities in Cameroon, and because return to competition was challenging in terms of infection and injury risks, the tournament was postponed from the 2019 edition to 2023. In this regard, I proposed a specific contextualised injury risk mitigation protocol an...

Is isometric exercise training the best FIT for exercise prescription in the prevention and treatment of arterial hypertension?
For patients with hypertension, recent international guidelines and expert statements based on comprehensive reviews of the literature recommend exercise as a first-line non-pharmacological treatment.1–6 There is a general agreement in the guidelines that aerobic exercise training (AET) at moderate intensity be performed for >150 min per week, for 20–30 min on five or more days per week, complemented by low to moderate intensity dynamic resistance exercise training (DRT) 2–3 times per week.1–4 The current guidelines and expert statements acknowledge the merits of isometric resistance training (IR...
