Cellular and molecular mechanisms of Notch signal in pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells after acute lung injury
This study focused on the effect and mechanism of Notch signal on pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) following acute lung injury. PMVECs were cultured in vitro and randomly divided into eight groups. Grouping was based on whether cells were co-cultured with T cells (splenic CD4+T cells were isolated using MACS microbeads) and the level of Notch expression: Normal group and Normal+T cells group, Model group and Model+T cells group, Notch low-expression group and Notch low-expression+T cells group, and Notch overexpression group and Notch overexpression+T cells group. Except for the Normal group and Normal+T ...

Clinical and morphological features of large-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas and small-cell lung carcinomas expressing the DLL3 and ASCL1 oncoproteins
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2023 Dec 22;56:e12921. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2023e12921. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIntratumoral similarities and differences between large-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNECs) and small-cell lung carcinomas (SCLCs) are determined partially by the Notch signaling pathway, which controls the switch from neuroendocrine to slight/non-neuroendocrine cell fate. LCNECs are divided into two subgroups according to genomic alterations: type I LCNECs exhibit a neuroendocrine profile characterized by achaete-scute homolog 1 (ASCL1)high/delta-like protein 3 (DLL3)high/NOTCHlow and type II LCNECs show the pattern ...

Sialic acid as the potential link between lipid metabolism and inflammation in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2023 Dec 11;56:e12972. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2023e12972. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIn the modern world, cardiovascular diseases have a special place among the most common causes of death. Naturally, this widespread problem cannot escape the attention of scientists and researchers. One of the main conditions preceding the development of fatal cardiovascular diseases is atherosclerosis. Despite extensive research into its pathogenesis and possible prevention and treatment strategies, many gaps remain in our understanding of this disease. For example, the concept of multiple low-density lipoprotein modific...

Neuroblastoma with superficial soft tissue mass as the first symptom: case reports with atypical ultrasonic image and literature review
We describe the imaging findings of ten cases of neuroblastoma patients in our hospital with superficial soft tissue mass (SSTM) as the primary symptom. The main ultrasound finding of SSTM was hypoechoic masses or scattered speck-like hyperechoic masses. However, when this type of SSTM is caused by soft tissue metastasis, the location is often atypical, and ultrasound findings are difficult to distinguish from other benign diseases. Therefore, this research should remind clinicians to recognize atypical presentations of this common childhood malignant tumor. Radiologists should also consider the possibility of neuroblastom...

Rectangular method: a modified technique for sampling the ischemic border zone in a rat model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2023 Dec 11;56:e13140. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2023e13140. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTTo date, there have been three common methods for sampling the cerebral ischemic border zone in a rat model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO): the "two o'clock method", the "diagonal method", and the "parallel line method". However, these methods have their own advantages and limitations. Here, we propose a modified technique (the "rectangular method") for sampling the ischemic border zone. A rat tMCAO model was prepared under the support of a compact small animal anesthesia machine. Cerebral blood flo...

Assessing multiple factors affecting the gut microbiome structure of very preterm infants
This study confirmed that the different feeding types, delivery modes, and use of antibiotics during pregnancy can significantly affect the composition of the gut microbiota of very preterm infants.PMID:38088676 | PMC:PMC10712283 | DOI:10.1590/1414-431X2023e13186 (Source: Braz J Med Biol Res)
