Bartonella henselae as a putative trigger for chronic type 2 leprosy reactions
Braz J Infect Dis. 2023 Nov 16:103701. doi: 10.1016/j.bjid.2023.103701. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLeprosy reactions are an acute inflammatory phenomenon that can arise before diagnosis, during treatment, or after cure of leprosy. These reactions are considered one of the main diseases that cause physical disabilities. Immunosuppressive treatment for these immune responses makes these patients susceptible to coinfections, which can trigger new leprosy reactions. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of infection by Bartonella sp. in blood samples from 47 patients who had untreatable episodes of...

Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter spp. from hospital intensive care units in Brazilian Amazon
Braz J Infect Dis. 2023 Nov 14:103687. doi: 10.1016/j.bjid.2023.103687. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcinetobacter spp. are one of the main pathogens responsible for healthcare-associated infections and are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality globally, mainly because of their high capacity to present and develop resistance to antimicrobials. To identify species of the Acinetobacter and their resistance profiles from samples collected from hospitalized patients, health professionals and hospital environmental sources in the intensive care units of different public reference hospitals in Porto Velho City, ...

Pharmacokinetics and therapeutic target attainment of vancomycin in pediatric post-liver transplant patients
CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with preserved renal function after liver transplantation have an increased volume of distribution for vancomycin, and most patients present subtherapeutic levels after the standard initial dosing regimen. With the vancomycin AUC-guided monitoring and dosing, it is possible to improve therapeutic target attainment.PMID:37977199 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjid.2023.103688 (Source: Braz J Infect Dis)

Investigation of etiology of community-acquired pneumonia in hospitalized patients in a tertiary hospital of S ão Paulo City, Brazil
CONCLUSION: Our study revealed different etiological causes of CAP than those suggested by the Brazilian guidelines. Using molecular diagnostic tests, we were able to optimize treatment by using fewer antibiotics.PMID:37972649 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjid.2023.103690 (Source: Braz J Infect Dis)

Sensitivity and specificity of a syphilis rapid diagnostic test in blood donors' samples
Braz J Infect Dis. 2023 Nov 13:103689. doi: 10.1016/j.bjid.2023.103689. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT) are useful to identify syphilis cases, particularly for hard-to-reach populations and if laboratory services are scarce. However, RDT performance may be suboptimal. We aimed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of a syphilis RDT using well-characterized blood donors' samples. We categorized samples from 811 blood donors into five groups: 1 - Samples with reactive Chemiluminescence (QML), FTA-Abs, and VDRL; 2 - Samples with reactive QML and FTA-Abs, and nonreactive VDRL; 3 - Samples with re...

Survival analysis over a 20-year period of a Brazilian cohort of blood donors coinfected HIV-HCV
Braz J Infect Dis. 2023 Sep-Oct;27(5):102810. doi: 10.1016/j.bjid.2023.102810. Epub 2023 Oct 6.ABSTRACTAmong individuals coinfected with HCV and HIV, studies of mortality from non-hepatic causes have shown inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of HCV and HIV co-infection to mortality from hepatic and non-hepatic causes in Brazil. This retrospective cohort study included blood donors from Fundação Pró-Sangue de São Paulo (FPS) who were followed from 1994 to 2016 to compare mortality and its causes between HIV-HCV coinfected individuals versus those seronegative for all tested in...
