Patient preferences for disposable and reusable vaginal specula and their willingness to compromise in the era of climate change: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: There is a small but statistically significant difference in favour of a biobased plastic speculum regarding comfort score, although it might be questioned whether this is clinically relevant. Furthermore, patients are willing to compromise on comfort for a more sustainable healthcare, which should be a contributing factor in speculum selection.PMID:38073255 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17733 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Predicting risk of endometrial cancer in asymptomatic women (PRECISION): Model development and external validation
CONCLUSIONS: The Predicting risk of endometrial cancer in asymptomatic women model (PRECISION), using easily measurable anthropometric, reproductive, personal and family history, accurately quantifies a woman's 10-year risk of endometrial cancer. Its use could determine eligibility for primary endometrial cancer prevention trials and for targeted resource allocation in UK general practices.PMID:38073256 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17729 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

The early determinants of career choices for medical students following an obstetrics and gynaecology placement: Mixed methods study
CONCLUSIONS: Obstetrics and gynaecology is perceived as an exciting and variable speciality by medical students. Students' experiences on the labour ward during a clinical placement appear to contribute to the consideration of a career in obstetrics and gynaecology. Students should be given opportunities to discuss their concerns about obstetrics, particularly over the potential psychological impact of adverse/traumatic birth events. It is crucial to provide a realistic introduction to obstetrics, to recruit enthusiastic junior doctors who will be resilient to the pressures of the speciality, to avoid burnout and minimise ...

Blood pressure measurement and adverse pregnancy outcomes: A cohort study testing blood pressure variability and alternatives to 140/90  mmHg
CONCLUSIONS: While our findings do not support lowering the BP threshold for pregnancy hypertension, they suggest BPV could be useful to identify elevated risk of adverse outcomes.PMID:38054262 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17724 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Persistent organic pollutant exposure as a risk factor of gestational diabetes mellitus: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Small mean differences between GDM cases and controls were observed for some POPs. However, evidence shows mostly moderate quality and results were heterogeneous. Improved research methodology is needed to assess POPs and GDM risk.PMID:38044810 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17725 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Ambient air pollution and adverse birth outcomes: A review of underlying mechanisms
BJOG. 2023 Nov 30. doi: 10.1111/1471-0528.17727. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpidemiological data provide varying degrees of evidence for associations between prenatal exposure to ambient air pollutants and adverse birth outcomes (suboptimal measures of fetal growth, preterm birth and stillbirth). To assess further certainty of effects, this review examines the experimental literature base to identify mechanisms by which air pollution (particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone) could cause adverse effects on the developing fetus. It likely that this environmental insult impacts multiple biological pathways important...
