ERS International Congress 2023: highlights from the Allied Respiratory Professionals Assembly
This article summarises some of the outstanding sessions that were (co)organised by the Allied Respiratory Professionals Assembly during the 2023 European Respiratory Society International Congress. Two sessions from each Assembly group are outlined, covering the following topics: Group 9.01 focuses on respiratory physiology techniques, specifically on predicted values and reference equations, device development and novel applications of cardiopulmonary exercise tests; Group 9.02 presents an overview of the talks given at the mini-symposium on exercise training, physical activity and self-management at home and outlines so...

< em > circPVT1 < /em > promotes silica-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition by modulating the miR-497-5p/TCF3 axis
J Biomed Res. 2023 Jul 3:163-174. doi: 10.7555/JBR.37.20220249. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a vital pathological feature of silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis. However, whether circRNA is involved in the process remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the role of circPVT1 in the silica-induced EMT and the underlying mechanisms. We found that an elevated expression of circPVT1 promoted EMT and enhanced the migratory capacity of silica-treated epithelial cells. The isolation of cytoplasmic and nuclear separation assay showed that circPVT1 was predominantly expressed...

Correlations between serum kidney injury molecule-1, cystatin C and immunosuppressants: A cross-sectional study of renal transplant patients in Bahrain
J Biomed Res. 2024 Mar 26:1-9. doi: 10.7555/JBR.37.20220211. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRenal transplant patients receive several immunosuppressive drug regimens that are potentially nephrotoxic for treatment. Serum creatinine is the standard for monitoring kidney function; however, cystatin C (Cys C) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) have been found to indicate kidney injury earlier than serum creatinine and provide a better reflection of kidney function. Here, we assessed Cys C and KIM-1 serum levels in renal transplant patients receiving mycophenolate mofetil, tacrolimus, sirolimus, everolimus, or cyclosporine to ...

CTNS Mutations Causing Autosomal Recessive Cystinosis in a Subset of Iranian Population: Report of Two New Variants
CONCLUSION: The mutational spectrum in the Iranian patients is the same as previously reported mutations except that two new mutations were found. The present findings will present suggestions for regular molecular diagnosis of cystinosis in Iran.PMID:38525388 | PMC:PMC10958734 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_149_23 (Source: Biomed Res)

A Comparison of the Clinical Outcomes of Minimum and Maximum Hematocrit Levels During Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) in Low-risk Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG): A Cross-sectional Study
CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study, patients undergoing CABG surgery with maximum HCT level versus minimum HCT level during CPB, need more packed cells and fresh frozen plasma products transfusion, which will be associated with the complication of cognitive impairment.PMID:38525389 | PMC:PMC10958727 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_145_23 (Source: Biomed Res)

Investigating the Effect of Aspirin on apoAI-Induced ATP Binding Cassette Transporter 1 Protein Expression and Cholesterol Efflux in Human Astrocytes
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest a potential role of aspirin in increasing ABCA1 expression and cholesterol efflux in astrocytes, similar to the effect of apoA-I. This indicates that aspirin could potentially regulate brain cholesterol balance and can be considered in certain neurological diseases, in particular in some neurological disorders related to cholesterol accumulation such as Alzheimer's disease.PMID:38525390 | PMC:PMC10958728 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_417_22 (Source: Biomed Res)

The Efficacy of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) versus Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Migraine Headaches: A Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that both rTMS and tDCS may be effective in reducing pain intensity and improving the impact of headaches on daily life and anxiety in patients with chronic migraine. However, significant improvement in depression was only observed in the rTMS group patients.PMID:38525392 | PMC:PMC10958735 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_142_23 (Source: Biomed Res)
