Effect of Porosity on the Colonization of Digital Light-Processed 3D Hydrogel Constructs toward the Development of a Functional Intestinal Model
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.4c00019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the rapid increase of the number of patients with gastrointestinal diseases in modern society, the need for the development of physiologically relevant in vitro intestinal models is key to improve the understanding of intestinal dysfunctions. This involves the development of a scaffold material exhibiting physiological stiffness and anatomical mimicry of the intestinal architecture. The current work focuses on evaluating the scaffold micromorphology of gelatin-methacryloyl-aminoethyl-methacrylate-based nonporous and porous in...

Radiopaque, Self-Immolative Poly(benzyl ether) as a Functional X-ray Contrast Agent: Synthesis, Prolonged Visibility, and Controlled Degradation
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c01392. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA self-immolative radiocontrast polymer agent has been newly designed for this study. The polymer agent is composed of a degradable poly(benzyl ether)-based backbone that enables complete and spontaneous depolymerization upon exposure to a specific stimulus, with iodophenyl pendant groups that confer a radiodensity comparable to that of commercial agents. In particular, when incorporated into a biodegradable polycaprolactone matrix, the agent not only reinforces the matrix and provides prolonged radiopacity without leaching but al...

POSS and PEG Contained Copolymer for Antibioadhesive Rigid Contact Lenses Materials Application
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c01317. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMyopia is a global public health issue. Rigid contact lenses (RCLs) are an effective way to correct or control myopia. However, bioadhesion issues remain one of the significant obstacles limiting its clinical application. Although enhancing hydrophilicity through various surface treatments can mitigate this problem, the duration of effectiveness is short-lived and the processing involved is complex and costly. Herein, an antiadhesive RCLs material was designed via 8-armed methacrylate-POSS (8MA-POSS), and poly(ethylene glycol) met...

Comparative Bioactivities of Chemically Modified Fucoidan and λ-Carrageenan toward Cells Encapsulated in Covalently Cross-Linked Hydrogels
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Mar 30. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.4c00228. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe sulfated marine polysaccharides, fucoidan and λ-carrageenan, are known to possess anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and cellular protective properties. Although they hold considerable promise for tissue engineering constructs, their covalent cross-linking in hydrogels and comparative bioactivities to cells are absent from the literature. Thus, fucoidan and λ-carrageenan were modified with methacrylate groups and were covalently cross-linked with the synthetic polymer poly(vinyl alcohol)-methacrylate (PVA-MA) to form 20 w...

Approaching Tryptophan-Derived Polynorbornene Fluorescent Chemosensors: Synthesis, Characterization, and Sensing Ability for Biomedical Applications as Biomarkers for Detecting Fe < sup > 2+ < /sup > Ions
We present a novel group of tryptophan (Trp)-based fluorescent polymeric probes synthesized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of Trp-derived norbornene monomers. These probes, in mono- and disubstituted forms, incorporate amide and ester anchoring groups. The quantity of Trp substituents did not affect fluorescence selectivity but influenced quenching percentage. Poly-diamide-Trp, Poly-monoamide-Trp, Poly-diester-Trp, and Poly-monoester-Trp probes displayed selective detection of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions with fluorescence on-off characteristics. Poly-diamide-Trp and Poly-monoamide-Trp exhibited a limit of detecti...

Supramolecular Hydrogels and Water Channels of Differing Diameters from Dipeptide Isomers
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Mar 29. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c01439. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDipeptides stereoisomers and regioisomers composed of norleucine (Nle) and phenylalanine (Phe) self-assemble into hydrogels under physiological conditions that are suitable for cell culture. The supramolecular behavior, however, differs as the packing modes comprise amphipathic layers or water channels, whose diameter is defined by either four or six dipeptide molecules. A variety of spectroscopy, microscopy, and synchrotron-radiation-based techniques unveil fine details of intermolecular interactions that pinpoint the relationsh...

A Biodegradable Janus Sponge for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Mar 28. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.4c00046. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNegative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is effective in repairing serious skin injury. The dressing used in the NPWT is important for wound healing. In this paper, we develop biodegradable amphiphilic polyurethanes (PUs) and fabricate the PUs into sponges as wound dressings (Bi@e) with Janus pore architectures for NPWT. The Bi@e is adaptive to all the stages of the wound healing process. The Janus Bi@e sponge consists of two layers: the dense hydrophobic upper layer with small pores provides protection and support during negative ...
