Association between Heavy Metals and Trace Elements in Cancerous and Non-cancerous Tissues with the Risk of Colorectal Cancer Progression in Northwest China
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Feb 20. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04077-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlterations in heavy metals and trace element levels may be associated with various cancers. However, the role of this interaction in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression is unclear. In recent years, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) models have provided new ideas for analyzing the effects of metal mixtures on CRC progression. Herein, we assessed the differences in the levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), and zinc...

Protective Effect of Protocatechuic Acid on Oxidative Damage and Cognitive Impairment in Pb-Induced Rats
In this study, we explored the protective effect of PCA on Pb-induced oxidative damage and cognitive impairment in rats. The results showed that PCA could reduce the Pb content in rat bodies (blood, bone, brain, liver, and kidney) after Pb exposure. Moreover, PCA may inhibit Pb-induced oxidative damage by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and decreasing the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the brain, liver, and kidney. In addition, PCA may alleviate Pb-induced learning and memory impairment by upregulating neurotransmitter levels; maintain...

Copper and Melanoma Risk: Results from NHANES 2007-2018 and Mendelian Randomization Analyses
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Feb 20. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04072-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCopper is an essential trace element obtained from food. There is a paucity of observational or prospective studies that have investigated the relationship between copper and melanoma risk. Copper serves as a cofactor for pivotal enzymes involved in mitochondrial respiration, antioxidant defense, and neurotransmitter synthesis. Undoubtedly, copper plays an indispensable role in the initiation and progression of tumors, particularly melanoma; however, further investigations are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms li...

Copper Promotes LPS-Induced Inflammation via the NF- кB Pathway in Bovine Macrophages
This study used bovine macrophages to establish lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation model. There were five groups in the study: a group treated with LPS (100 ng/ml), a group treated with either copper chelator (tetrathiomolybdate, TTM) (20 μmol) or CuSO4 (25 μmol or 50 μmol) after LPS stimulation, and a control group. Copper concentrations increased in macrophages after the LPS treatment. TTM decreased mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory factors (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, iNOS, and COX-2), whereas copper supplement increased them. Compared to the control group, TLP4 and MyD88 protein levels were increased in the T...

Evaluate the Work-Related Exposure of Vanadium on Scalp Hair Samples of Outdoor and Administrative Workers of Oil Drilling Field: Related Health Risks
This study determined the contents of V in a biological sample (scalp hair) of workers of different categories (outdoor and office workers) in an oil drilling field in Sindh, Pakistan. The environmental samples, groundwater, bottled mineral water, and soil samples were also analyzed for V. For comparative purposes, the scalp hair of age-matched male subjects residing in domestic areas of Hyderabad city, Pakistan, was also analyzed. Generally, the concentrations of V in groundwater near the oil drilling field and drilled soil illustrated significant variations. The results show that the vanadium concentration in the scalp h...

Effects of Zinc Compounds on the Enzymatic Activities of Lysozyme and Peroxidase and Their Antifungal Activities
In conclusion, zinc compounds enhanced lysozyme activity but inhibited peroxidase activity. Zinc compounds exhibited concentration-dependent candidacidal activity against C. albicans. Zinc compounds are potential therapeutic agents for oral health, especially for geriatric patients.PMID:38376730 | DOI:10.1007/s12011-024-04110-x (Source: Biological Trace Element Research)

Grape Seed Proanthocyanidins Protect Pancreatic β Cells Against Ferroptosis via the Nrf2 Pathway in Type 2 Diabetes
This study explored the role of ferroptosis in pancreatic β cell damage and the protective effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE). In T2DM model rats, the blood glucose, water intake, urine volume, HbA1c, and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance were significantly increased, while the body weight and the insulin level were significantly decreased, indicating the successful establishment of the T2DM model. MIN6 mouse insulinoma β cells were cultured in high glucose and sodium palmitate conditions to obtain a glycolipid damage model, which was administered with GSPE, ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), or nucl...

Boric Acid Affects the Expression of DNA Double-Strand Break Repair Factors in A549 Cells and A549 Cancer Stem Cells: An In Vitro Study
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Feb 17. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04082-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDNA double-strand break (DSB) repair genes interact with tumor stemness- and resistance-associated processes in cancer stem cells (CSCs). Therefore, targeting DNA DSB genes in cancer treatment is important for the CSC phenotype. Although the anti-cancer effect of boric acid (BA) has been studied, its effect on DNA DSB is unclear. Moreover, no studies investigate BA's effects on DNA DSB of lung cancer stem cells (LC-SCs). To fill the gap, we aimed to assess the effects of BA on A549 cancer stem cells. CSCs were isolated from hum...
