Self-construal modulates context-based social comparison preferences in outcome evaluations
Biol Psychol. 2023 Sep 7:108682. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsycho.2023.108682. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSelf-construal (SC) describes how people perceive the relationship between themselves and others and is usually divided into interdependent and independent types. Several studies have been conducted on how people with independent and interdependent SC process their own and others' outcomes. However, few studies have investigated the influence of SC on outcome evaluation in a social comparison context. To explore this, we randomly assigned participants to interdependent and independent SC priming groups and analyzed the affe...

Explicit Face Memory Abilities are positively related to the non-intentional Encoding of Faces: Behavioral and ERP Evidence
Biol Psychol. 2023 Sep 7:108672. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsycho.2023.108672. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndividual differences in face memory abilities have been shown to be related to individual differences in brain activity. The present study investigated brain-behavior relationships for the N250 component in event-related brain potentials, which is taken as a neural sign of face familiarity. We used a task in which a designated, typical target face and several (high- and low-distinctive) nontarget faces had to be distinguished during multiple presentations across a session. Separately, face memory/recognition abilities wer...

EXAMINING LEVELS OF PROCESSING USING VERBAL & amp; PICTORIAL STIMULI WITH THE COMPLEX TRIAL PROTOCOL IN A MOCK THEFT SCENARIO
Biol Psychol. 2023 Aug 31:108666. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsycho.2023.108666. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Complex Trial Protocol (CTP) is an EEG-based Concealed Information Test (CIT). Depth of processing influences memorability where deeper processing increases recollection. The CTP's performance as a function of shallow versus deep levels of processing has not been explored. Two experiments were conducted, one with verbal stimuli and the other with their pictorial referents. In both experiments, participants were randomly assigned to three groups, Innocent Control (Control) condition, Guilty Immediate Shallow Processing ...

Nonverbal Behavioral Patterns Predict Social Rejection Elicited Aggression
Biol Psychol. 2023 Aug 29:108670. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsycho.2023.108670. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAggression elicited by social rejection is costly, prevalent, and often lethal. Attempts to predict rejection-elicited aggression using trait-based data have had little success. This may be because in-the-moment aggression is a complex process influenced by current states of attention, arousal, and affect which are poorly predicted by trait-level characteristics. In a study of young adults (N=89; 18-25 years), machine learning tested the extent to which nonverbal behavioral indices of attention (eye gaze), arousal (pupilla...

Imagery, emotion, and bioinformational theory: From body to brain
Biol Psychol. 2023 Aug 28:108669. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsycho.2023.108669. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe bioinformational theory of emotional imagery is a model of the hypothetical mental representations activated when people imagine emotionally engaging events, and was initially proposed to guide research and practice in the use of imaginal exposure as a treatment for fear and anxiety (Lang, 1979). In this 50 year overview, we discuss the development of bioinformational theory and its impact in the study of psychophysiology and psychopathology, most importantly assessing its viability and predictions in light of more rec...

A Perinatal Coparenting Intervention: Effects of a Randomized Trial on Parent Cardiometabolic Risk and Self-Reported Health
CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that coparenting-focused interventions, such as Family Foundations, can lead to benefits beyond psychosocial and behavioral outcomes, and suggest that Family Foundations may improve parents' longer-term physical health, with potentially more benefits among couples who demonstrated more negative communication styles during pregnancy.PMID:37625684 | DOI:10.1016/j.biopsycho.2023.108664 (Source: Biological Psychology)
