Stuck in the past? Rumination-related memory integration
Behav Res Ther. 2023 Mar 2;163:104287. doi: 10.1016/j.brat.2023.104287. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMemories connected to ruminative concerns repetitively capture attention, even in situations designed to alter them. However, recent research on memory updating suggests that memory for benign substitutes (e.g., reinterpretations) might be facilitated by integration with the ruminative memories. As a first approach, two experiments (Ns = 72) mimicked rumination-related memories with rumination-themed stimuli and an imagery task. College undergraduates screened for ruminative status first studied and imaged ruminative cue-t...

The role of general change mechanisms in sudden gains in the treatment of anorexia nervosa
This study investigated the role of general change mechanisms in body-weight related SGs in AN. Data were drawn from a randomized-controlled trial on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and focal psychodynamic therapy (FPT) for adult outpatients with AN. Session-level data on the general change mechanisms 'clarification' (insight), 'mastery' (coping), and 'therapeutic relationship' were analyzed. Pre-gain sessions were compared with control (pre-pre-gain) sessions in 99 patients with a SG in body weight. Additionally, propensity score matching was used to compare data from pre-gain sessions from 44 patients with SG and data...

Self-guided online treatment of disturbed grief, posttraumatic stress, and depression in adults bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: The online CBT proved to be an effective intervention, reducing PCBD, PTSD, and depression symptoms. Pending replication of these findings, early online interventions may be widely implemented in practice to improve treatments for distressed bereaved people.PMID:36906949 | DOI:10.1016/j.brat.2023.104286 (Source: Behaviour Research and Therapy)

Less is more: Decreasing the frequency of maladaptive coping predicts improvements in DBT more consistently than increasing the frequency of adaptive coping
Behav Res Ther. 2023 Mar 2;163:104288. doi: 10.1016/j.brat.2023.104288. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIt is well-established that participation in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) results in patients using adaptive coping strategies more frequently. Although coping skill instruction may be necessary to promote decreases in symptoms and behavioral targets in DBT, it is unclear if the frequency with which patients use adaptive coping skills leads to these outcomes. Alternatively, it is possible that DBT also leads patients to use maladaptive strategies less frequently and that these reductions more consistently predict imp...

Changes in trauma-related cognitions predict subsequent symptom improvement during prolonged exposure in patients with childhood abuse-related PTSD
Behav Res Ther. 2023 Feb 24;163:104284. doi: 10.1016/j.brat.2023.104284. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChange in negative posttraumatic cognitions is a proposed mechanism through which Prolonged Exposure (PE) leads to symptom reduction of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A strong case for posttraumatic cognitions as a change mechanism in PTSD treatment can be made by establishing temporal precedence of change in cognitions. The current study examines the temporal relationship between change in posttraumatic cognitions and PTSD symptoms during PE, using the Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory. Patients with DSM-5 define...

Negative interpretation bias as a clinical marker and a scar of depression: New insights from a large-scale study of the scrambled sentence task in formerly, subclinically and clinically depressed individuals
Behav Res Ther. 2023 Feb 13;163:104276. doi: 10.1016/j.brat.2023.104276. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNegative interpretation biases are thought to be clinical markers of depression and risk factors for its recurrence that would remain active after remission. Evidence on the conditions under which negative interpretation biases are active after remission is still unclear, and further studies are required to clarify whether negative interpretation biases are equivalent in magnitude at different depression conditions. A large-scale study of the Scrambled Sentence Task (SST) was conducted (639 participants), where different ...
