Older adults who move to independent living units: A regional Australian study
ConclusionsThis study provides the views and experiences of 19 older adults from regional Australia about moving into ILUs in a three ‐tier complex. The strategic choice of an ILU in a three‐tier complex was seen as providing appro priate care into an unknown future. This study highlights the importance for older adults, their families and health‐care professionals of making timely relocation decisions and the importance ...

Breaking the news: Belief in fake news and conspiracist beliefs
ConclusionPrior political beliefs and the tendency for conspiracist ideation appear particularly important for individuals' endorsement of FN, regardless of prior exposure to the specific news presented. As such, conspiracy theory (CT) belief and its underlying mechanisms appear a useful starting point in identifying some of the underlying individual difference variables involved in conspiratorial and non ‐conspiratorial FN belief. Implications and limitations are discussed. (Source: Australian Journal of Psychology)

Establishing norms for mental well ‐being in young people (7–19 years) using the General Health Questionnaire‐12
ConclusionsOur results support the use of the GHQ ‐12 for the measurement of mental well‐being symptoms in children from 7 to 19 years of age. Overall, psychometric properties including sensitivity, suggest that the GHQ‐12 provides a robust indicator of short‐term mental state in children and adolescents. Sleep and psychological wellbeing of racehorse industry workers: A survey of Australian trainers
ConclusionsDaytime dysfunction due to fatigue was an important predictor of lower psychological wellbeing in this sample of horse trainers. Longitudinal and qualitative investigation of both sleep and non ‐sleep as factors in generating fatigue could assist to further delineate predictors of depression and anxiety in this population. Better understanding of interacting sleep and wellbeing processes may lead to useful self‐management strategies to address the apparent heightened psychological dist ress of some racing industry workers. Volunteering benefits life satisfaction over 4 years: The moderating role of social network size
ConclusionWe found that longer volunteering time was associated with a higher level of increase in life satisfaction during the 4 ‐year interval. Life satisfaction increased more in participants who lost more friends than in participants who lost fewer friends. Consistent with socioemotional selectivity theory, emotional goals were positively associated with more short‐term and long‐term volunteering behaviours. These fi ndings provide scientific insight into the mechanisms and motives underlying the positive effects of volunteering on life satisfaction in old age. (Source: Australian Journal of Psychology)

Relationships between psychoevolutionary fear of evaluation, cognitive distortions, and social anxiety symptoms: A preliminary structural equation model
Social anxiety disorder is a mental health condition that affects 4.7% of Australians each year. The complex interplay between psychoevolutionary and cognitive models has become the focus of research in recent years, particularly with the development of the bivalent fear of evaluation model (i.e., negative and positive evaluation fears). The present study aimed to test a model of social anxiety symptoms using structural equation modelling, integrating previously fragmented evidence. A sample of 255 participants (75.3% female;Mage = 31.9,SD = 10.3) undertook an online survey, including Social Phobia Scale, Brief Fea...

Characteristics and experiences of targeted parents of parental alienation from their own perspective: A systematic literature review
ConclusionTargeted parents report consistent stories about the nature of the alienation tactics used by alienating parents across the included studies. Targeted parents expressed dissatisfaction with legal and mental health system services available to them. Further, despite feeling despair, frustration, and isolation, targeted parents appear to be resilient and seek out positive coping strategies. This review showed that research on targeted parents from their own perspective is sparse, and more studies are needed. (Source: Australian Journal of Psychology)
