A Video-based Automated Tracking and Analysis System of Plaque Burden in Carotid Artery Using Deep Learning: A Comparison with Senior Sonographers
CONCLUSION: Our findings have indicated that the RVM model can be used in ultrasound carotid video. The RVM model can automatically segment and quantify atherosclerotic plaque burden at the same diagnostic level as senior sonographers. The application of AI to carotid videos offers more precise and effective methods to evaluate carotid atherosclerosis in clinical practice.PMID:38639284 | DOI:10.2174/0115734056296233240401061756 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Independent Relationship of Lipoprotein(a) and Carotid Atherosclerosis With Long-Term Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Higher Lp(a) concentrations are independently associated with long-term ASCVD risk and may exaggerate cardiovascular risk when concomitant with atherosclerotic plaque.PMID:38639362 | DOI:10.1161/JAHA.123.033488 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Is aortic knob width a novel predictor of mortality in hemodialysis patients?
CONCLUSIONS: Age, male gender, aortic calcification, and hypertension are the primary risk factors for increased aortic knob width in hemodialysis patients. Aortic knob width greater than 37.98 mm, which can be measured simply and rapidly using posterior-anterior chest radiography, may be a predictor of mortality.GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT: https://www.europeanreview.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/Graphical-Abstract-10.jpg.PMID:38639520 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35909 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Atherosclerotic burden and cerebral small vessel disease: exploring the link through microvascular aging and cerebral microhemorrhages
Geroscience. 2024 Apr 19. doi: 10.1007/s11357-024-01139-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebral microhemorrhages (CMHs, also known as cerebral microbleeds) are a critical but frequently underestimated aspect of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), bearing substantial clinical consequences. Detectable through sensitive neuroimaging techniques, CMHs reveal an extensive pathological landscape. They are prevalent in the aging population, with multiple CMHs often being observed in a given individual. CMHs are closely associated with accelerated cognitive decline and are increasingly recognized as key contributors to the path...

Remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apoB absolute mass changes explain results of the PROMINENT trial.
The PROMINENT trial, a cardiovascular outcome trial of the triglyceride- and remnant cholesterol-lowering agent pemafibrate, has shown neutral results despite reduction in plasma triglycerides and remnant cholesterol. We tested the hypothesis that absolute mass changes in remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B explain the results of the PROMINENT trial. (Source: Atherosclerosis)

The Nutri-Score nutrition label: Associations between the underlying nutritional profile of foods and lipoprotein particle subclass profiles in adults
Lipoprotein particle concentrations and size are associated with increased risk for atherosclerosis and premature cardiovascular disease. Certain dietary behaviours may be cardioprotective and public health strategies are needed to guide consumers ’ dietary choices and help prevent diet-related disease. The Food Standards Agency nutrient profiling system (FSAm-NPS) constitutes the basis of the five-colour front-of-pack Nutri-Score labelling system. No study has examined FSAm-NPS index associations with a wide range of lipoprotein particle s ubclasses. (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Atherosclerotic Plaque Epigenetic Age Acceleration Predicts a Poor Prognosis and Is Associated With Endothelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition in Humans
CONCLUSIONS: Plaque EAA is a strong and independent marker of poor outcome in patients with severe atherosclerosis. Plaque EAA was linked to mesenchymal endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition was associated with EAA, which was experimentally validated. Epigenetic aging mechanisms may provide new targets for treatments that reduce atherosclerosis complications.PMID:38634280 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.320692 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Pragmatic Trial of Messaging to Providers About Treatment of Hyperlipidemia (PROMPT-LIPID): A Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS: With a real-time, targeted, individualized EHR alert as compared with usual care, the proportion of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with LLT intensification was numerically higher but not statistically significant. Among clinicians who did not dismiss the alert, there was a > 2-fold increase in LLT intensification. EHR alerts, coupled with strategies to reduce clinician dismissal, may help address persistent gaps in LDL-C management.REGISTRATION: URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov; Unique identifier: NCT04394715, https://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/study/NCT04394715.PMID:38634282 |...

KLF13 promotes VSMCs phenotypic dedifferentiation by directly binding to the SM22 α promoter
In this study, we investigated the relationship between KLF13 and SM22α expression in normal and atherosclerotic plaques by bioanalysis, and observed a significant increase in KLF13 levels in the atherosclerotic plaques of both human patients and ApoE-/- mice. Knockdown of KLF13 was found to ameliorate intimal hyperplasia following carotid artery injury. Furthermore, we discovered that KLF13 directly binds to the SM22α promoter, leading to the phenotypic dedifferentiation of VSMCs. Remarkably, we observed a significant inhibition of platelet-derived growth factor BB-induced VSMCs dedifferentiation, proliferation, and mig...

Muscarinic Receptors in Cardioprotection and Vascular Tone Regulation
Physiol Res. 2024 Apr 18. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMuscarinic acetylcholine receptors are metabotropic G-protein coupled receptors. Muscarinic receptors in the cardiovascular system play a central role in its regulation. Particularly M2 receptors slow down the heart rate by reducing the impulse conductivity through the atrioventricular node. In general, activation of muscarinic receptors has sedative effects on the cardiovascular system, including vasodilation, negative chronotropic and inotropic effects on the heart, and cardioprotective effects, including antifibrillatory effects. First, we review the signaling of i...

Effects of hypertriglyceridemia with or without NEFA elevation on β-cell function and insulin clearance and sensitivity
CONCLUSION: In healthy non-obese subjects, mild acute hypertriglyceridemia directly reduces glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity and clearance, and has selective and opposite effects on β-cell function that are neutralized by NEFAs. These findings provide new insight into plausible biological signals that generate and sustain insulin resistance and chronic hyperinsulinemia in the development of T2D.PMID:38635405 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae276 (Source: Atherosclerosis)
