Significance of the Wnt signaling pathway in coronary artery atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the upregulation of three important members of canonical and non-canonical Wnt signaling pathways and their receptors in coronary atherosclerosis and shows an important role for these molecules in plaque development through increased cellular remodeling and impaired cholesterol handling.PMID:38586172 | PMC:PMC10995361 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2024.1360380 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Associations of sleep disorders with all-cause MCI/dementia and different types of dementia - clinical evidence, potential pathomechanisms and treatment options: A narrative review
Front Neurosci. 2024 Mar 22;18:1372326. doi: 10.3389/fnins.2024.1372326. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTDue to worldwide demographic change, the number of older persons in the population is increasing. Aging is accompanied by changes of sleep structure, deposition of beta-amyloid (Aß) and tau proteins and vascular changes and can turn into mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as well as dementia. Sleep disorders are discussed both as a risk factor for and as a consequence of MCI/dementia. Cross-sectional and longitudinal population-based as well as case-control studies revealed sleep disorders, especially sleep-disorderded breathing...

Deciphering thyroid function and CIMT: a Mendelian randomization study of the U-shaped influence mediated by apolipoproteins
CONCLUSION: This research establishes a causal link between thyroid function and CIMT using MR methods, underscoring the importance of monitoring thyroid function for early cardiovascular risk assessment. The results advocate for the consideration of thyroid hormone supplementation in hypothyroid patients as a strategy to mitigate the risk of carotid atherosclerosis. These insights pave the way for more targeted approaches in managing patients with thyroid dysfunction to prevent cardiovascular complications.PMID:38586463 | PMC:PMC10995244 | DOI:10.3389/fendo.2024.1345267 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

A dual-targeting therapeutic nanobubble for imaging-guided atherosclerosis treatment
Mater Today Bio. 2024 Mar 22;26:101037. doi: 10.1016/j.mtbio.2024.101037. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease that seriously endangers human health. Low shear stress (LSS) is recognized as a vital factor in causing chronic inflammatory and further inducing the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis. Targeting imaging and treatment are of substantial significance for the diagnosis and therapy of atherosclerosis. On this ground, a kind of ultrasound (US) imaging-guided therapeutic polymer nanobubbles (NBs) with dual targeting of magnetism and antibody was rationally designed and co...

Ox-LDL-induced CD80 < sup > + < /sup > macrophages expand pro-atherosclerotic NKT cells via CD1d in atherosclerotic mice and hyperlipidemic patients
Am J Physiol Cell Physiol. 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.1152/ajpcell.00043.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of blood vessels involving the immune system. Natural killer T (NKT) cells, as crucial components of the innate and acquired immune systems, play critical roles in the development of atherosclerosis. However, the mechanism and clinical relevance of NKT cells in early atherosclerosis are largely unclear. Our findings demonstrated that there were higher populations of NKT cells and interferon gamma (IFN-γ)-producing NKT cells in the peripheral blood of patients with hyperlipidemia ...

The effect of significant weight loss after bariatric surgery on echocardiographic indices: an observational study focusing on left ventricular deformation by 2D speckle echocardiography and right ventricular size
CONCLUSIONS: Bariatric surgery could enhance cardiac function, as proven by 2D speckle echocardiography. Changes in RV size may be related to weight loss and should be considered when assessing patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.PMID:38587759 | DOI:10.1186/s43044-024-00474-6 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Early-onset versus late-onset preeclampsia and risk of coronary atherosclerosis later in life: a clinical follow-up study
CONCLUSIONS: Women with early-onset preeclampsia had a slightly higher risk of coronary atherosclerosis compared to women with late-onset preeclampsia. However, based on the current evidence it does not seem indicated to limit screening, diagnostic and preventive measures for cardiovascular disease only to women with early-onset preeclampsia.PMID:38588914 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajogmf.2024.101371 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Management of carotid atherosclerosis in stroke
Pract Neurol. 2024 Apr 8:pn-2023-003918. doi: 10.1136/pn-2023-003918. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInternal carotid artery atherosclerosis is a major risk factor for stroke, accounting for 15-20% of ischaemic strokes. Revascularisation procedures-either carotid endarterectomy or carotid artery stenting-can reduce the risk of stroke for those with significant (>50%) luminal stenosis but particularly for those with more severe (70-99%) stenosis. However, advances in medical pharmacotherapy have implications for the relative benefit from surgery for symptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, as well as our approach to asymptoma...

RSAD2 is abundant in atherosclerotic plaques and promotes interferon-induced CXCR3-chemokines in human smooth muscle cells
Sci Rep. 2024 Apr 8;14(1):8196. doi: 10.1038/s41598-024-58592-9.ABSTRACTIn atherosclerotic lesions, monocyte-derived macrophages are major source of interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a pleotropic cytokine known to regulate the expression of numerous genes, including the antiviral gene RSAD2. While RSAD2 was reported to be expressed in endothelial cells of human carotid lesions, its significance for the development of atherosclerosis remains utterly unknown. Here, we harnessed publicly available human carotid atherosclerotic data to explore RSAD2 in lesions and employed siRNA-mediated gene-knockdown to investigate its function in ...
