A survey of the effects of ramelteon on benzodiazepine-dependence: Comparison between a ramelteon add-on group and a continuous benzodiazepine administration group.
Authors: Naono-Nagatomo K, Abe H, Araki R, Funahashi H, Takeda R, Taniguchi H, Ishida Y Abstract In general, long-term benzodiazepine hypnotics are prescribed for patients in whom it is difficult to reduce benzodiazepine hypnotics. Unlike benzodiazepine receptor (BZ)-mediated sleep agents, ramelteon induces quasi-natural physiological sleep owing to its mechanism of action. We conducted a survey of ramelteon and BZ-dependence in patients with insomnia. Study subjects were patients with insomnia (42 cases), who were divided into a ramelteon group (22 cases; administered 8 mg/day of ramelteon before sleep in additi...

PCA is an uncommon early onset dementia affecting adults between 50 and 65 years. It presents predominantly with visuo-spatial and visuo-perceptual deficits. PCA is a phenotype with varied e...

Lower P300 amplitudes for internally-generated events in patients with schizophrenia.
CONCLUSION: P300 amplitude was lower for internally-generated but not externally-generated events in patients with schizophrenia. These findings suggest that patients allocate less attentional resources to internally generated events resulting in poorer processing and consequent misattribution of their source of origin. This study provides the first specific electrophysiological evidence of impaired source monitoring in schizophrenia. Serum uric acid levels in first episode mania, effect on clinical presentation and treatment response: Data from a case control study.
Authors: Chatterjee SS, Ghosal S, Mitra S, Mallik N, Ghosal MK Abstract Bipolar disorder (BD) patients have increased serum Uric Acid (UA) levels as compared to their healthy counterparts. They also demonstrate higher impulsivity - while symptomatic, as well as when in remission. Impulsivity adds a risk of self-harming behavior to BD, and studies show that it increases with UA levels. Given this complex relationship, the current project aimed at comparing UA levels in first-episode mania patients with matched controls, and analyzes its relationship with impulsivity, symptom severity and disease prognosis. Thirty-on...
