Does retinoic acid reverse cell cycle dysregulation in Alzheimer's disease lymphocytes?
Authors: Ashok A, Naaz S, Kota LN, Sen S, Purushottam M, Faruq M, Kumari R, Yadav V, Kannan R, Jain S, Panicker MM, Viswanath B Abstract Aberrant re-entry of neurons into cell cycle appears to be an early event in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and targeting this dysregulation may have therapeutic potential. We have examined whether cell cycle dysregulation in AD can be detected using patient and control derived B-lymphocytes. Cell cycle analysis using flow cytometry demonstrated that cell cycle dysregulation occurs in AD lymphocytes, with a significant difference in the distribution of cells in G0/G1, S and G2/M phases ...

Directional brain networks underlying OM chanting.
Authors: Rao NP, Deshpande G, Gangadhar KB, Arasappa R, Varambally S, Venkatasubramanian G, Ganagadhar BN Abstract OM chanting is an ancient technique of Indian meditation. OM chanting is associated with an experience of relaxation, changes in autonomic balance and deactivation of limbic brain regions. While functional localization is important, how brain regions interact with each other has been shown to underlie various brain functions. Therefore, in this study, we tested the hypothesis that there is reduced communication between deactivated regions during OM chanting. In order to do so, we employed multivariate ...

Anxiety and somatic symptoms among elderly patients with depression.
CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that there is a higher prevalence of anxiety and somatic symptoms in elderly patients with depression and GDS-30 is unable to capture all the symptoms of depression among elderly in the Indian context. Hence, complete assessment of depression in elderly should include assessment of anxiety and somatic symptoms by using other scales like GAD-7,BDI-II and PHQ-15. There is a need to develop a new scale which will be helpful in capturing the entire symptom profile of depression among elderly.
