Exploring cause-specific strategies for suicide prevention in India: A multivariate VARMA approach
This study investigates time-series data with multiple variables to model and forecast suicide events in India. Utilizing official suicide statistics (2001-2021), results highlight the superiority of the multivariate VARMA model over VAR and univariate ARIMA models. This approach uncovers overlooked patterns and a concerning upward trend in future Indian suicide incidents. The research provides insights that aid public health professionals in targeting high-need areas and enhancing readiness and suggests cause-specific preventive strategies to counter this trend.PMID:38160524 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajp.2023.103871 (Source: Asian ...

Neuroscience in pictures:1. History of psychiatric neuroscience
Asian J Psychiatr. 2023 Dec 14;92:103869. doi: 10.1016/j.ajp.2023.103869. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur understanding of the brain basis of mental illness has evolved over three and half millennia. Early insights into the role of the brain in relation to the mind faded during the middle ages as mental illness became the province of religion, spirituality, and philosophy. Psychiatry became a medical discipline again as medical and scientific thinking evolved during the 17th century. However, progress in neuroscience and astute clinical observations were punctuated by setbacks due to lingering dualism, reductionistic thi...

Electroconvulsive therapy in South Asia: Past, present, and future
Asian J Psychiatr. 2023 Dec 17;92:103875. doi: 10.1016/j.ajp.2023.103875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe practice of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) varies both between and within countries. We aimed to review historical and current trends in ECT practices, perceptions, and legislations in South Asia, a region with a high burden of mental illness and suicide. We searched MEDLINE (PubMed) and Google Scholar databases for relevant literature on ECT from each country. Additionally, a team of country-specific investigators performed supplemental searches and contacted key country contacts for relevant information. Relevant ...

Range adaptive value representations in schizophrenia and major depression
This study aimed to examine range adaptation in SCZ patients and MDD patients. Fifty SCZ, 46 MDD patients and 56 controls completed the Effort-based Pleasure Experience Task to measure EV and OV adaptation. SCZ and MDD patients showed altered range adaptation, albeit in different patterns. SCZ patients exhibited over-adaptation to OV and reduced adaptation to EV. By contrast, MDD patients exhibited diminished OV adaptation but intact EV adaptation. Both OV and EV adaptation were correlated with anhedonia and amotivation in SCZ and MDD. Taken together, our findings suggest that range adaptation is altered in both SCZ and MD...

A prospective cohort study to assess the prevalence and risk factors of antepartum depression and its effect on maternal and fetal outcome
This study was designed to determine i) the prevalence rate of APD in the Indian population and its associated risk factors, ii) the impact of APD on maternal and fetal outcomes. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among antenatal women in the third trimester and screened for antepartum depression between October 2021 and March 2022 by adopting the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). In the study population, 36.6 % had mild to moderate level of depressive symptoms (EPDS score of 8-12) and 28 % had high levels of depressive symptoms (EPDS score of ≥13).
