Validation of a Definition of Flare in Patients With Established Gout
ConclusionThe definition of gout flare that requires fulfillment of at least 3 of 4 patient‐reported criteria is now validated to be sensitive, specific, and accurate for gout flares, as demonstrated using an independent large international patient sample. The availability of a validated gout flare definition will improve the ascertainment of an important clinical outcome in studies of gout. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatism)

18F ‐Fluorodeoxyglucose–Positron Emission Tomography As an Imaging Biomarker in a Prospective, Longitudinal Cohort of Patients With Large Vessel Vasculitis
ConclusionFDG‐PET provides information about vascular inflammation that is complementary to, and distinct from, clinical assessment in LVV. FDG‐PET scan activity during clinical remission was associated with future clinical relapse. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatism)

Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis/Outcome Measures in Rheumatology Consensus ‐Based Recommendations and Research Agenda for Use of Composite Measures and Treatment Targets in Psoriatic Arthritis
ConclusionConsensus was not reached on a continuous measure of disease activity. In the interim, the group recommended several composites. Consensus was reached on a treatment target of VLDA/MDA. An extensive research agenda was composed and recommends that data on all PsA clinical domains be collected in ongoing studies. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatism)

Sex Differences in Health Care Utilization, End ‐Stage Renal Disease, and Mortality Among Medicaid Beneficiaries With Incident Lupus Nephritis
ConclusionIn this cohort of patients with incident LN, ESRD and mortality were extremely high overall but were not increased among males compared to females. In this vulnerable population, biologic and health care utilization differences by sex may not significantly affect outcomes. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatism)

Cancer Immunotherapy in Patients With Preexisting Rheumatic Disease: The Mayo Clinic Experience
ConclusionTo our knowledge, this represents the largest single‐center cohort of patients with rheumatic diseases who were exposed to modern cancer immunotherapy. Only a minority of these patients experienced a flare of their preexisting rheumatic disease or any other IRAE. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatism)

Novel UNC13D intronic variant disrupting a NF κB enhancer in a patient with recurrent macrophage activation syndrome and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis
ConclusionThese findings highlight that intronic variants in key regulatory regions may be associated with MAS in patients with SJIA, and support deep sequencing approaches when causative coding variants are not identified. This article is protected by copyright. TGF β activation primes canonical Wnt signaling through the downregulation of AXIN2
ConclusionsThis study highlights the importance of reduced AXIN2 bioavailability in mediating the increased canonical Wnt response observed in SSc fibroblasts. This novel mechanism extends our understanding of the processes involved in Wnt/β‐catenin‐driven pathology and supports the rationale for targeting the TGFβ pathway to regulate the aberrant Wnt signaling observed during fibrosis. This article is protected by copyright. A multi centre retrospective analysis evaluating performance of synovial biopsy techniques: arthroscopic vs. ultrasound guided vs. blind needle biopsy
ConclusionsThese data support the integration of US‐guided methods along with arthroscopic biopsy for clinical trial protocols necessitating sequential sampling of synovium from large and small joints for both histological and molecular analysis. BN biopsy may be considered if graded synovial tissue is not required for subsequent analyses. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatism)

2015 Rheumatology Workforce Study: The Role of Graduate Medical Education in Adult Rheumatology
ConclusionThe current U.S. adult rheumatology workforce is in jeopardy of accelerated decline at a time when demands on the workforce face tremendous growth. The current GME training structure cannot support the increased demand. Potential strategies to address this gap include innovative mechanisms for GME funding to increase fellowship training positions, incentives for pursuing rheumatology training (e.g., loan repayment programs), and novel means for recruitment of care to underserved areas of the U.S.This article is protected by copyright.
