Combined transscleral fixation of an artificial iris prosthesis with an intraocular lens
ABSTRACT Post-traumatic aniridia combined with aphakia may be seen after globe injury. Aside from esthetic aspects, partial or total loss of the iris tissue may also be related to various degrees of glare and photophobia. Such patients suffer from severe visual impairment secondary to aphakia. Herein we describe a novel surgical technique for the management of an aphakic eye with traumatic aniridia for a patient who underwent transscleral fixation of a custom-tailored artificial iris prosthesis combined with a rigid intraocular lens (IOL). Tight suturing of the IOL haptic eyelets on the silicone iris prosthesis and fixatio...

Using thermography for an obstruction of the lower lacrimal system
ABSTRACT Obstructions in the lacrimal pathways quite often require accurate and reliable image scanning for confirmation and documentation. Infrared thermal imaging, known as thermography, is a resource that complements diagnosis; it does not require touching the patient or applying contrast materials and has been used in various medical procedures for decades. However, there have been few studies in the literature about its use in ophthalmology. In this paper, the authors have presented a case of dacryocystitis where the obstruction of the lacrimal punctum was so acute that conventional dacryocystography could not be used...

Production of an intraocular device using 3D printing: an innovative technology for ophthalmology
ABSTRACT Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterized by the loss of ganglion cells and their axons. A major risk factor for glaucomatous visual field loss is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), and several studies have shown that lowering IOP reduces the risk of glaucomatous progression. Currently, an increasing number of researches involve Rho kinase inhibitors, which are a new pharmacological class of hypotensive agents specifically targeting the diseased trabecular outflow pathway. Rho kinase inhibitors reduce IOP by increasing aqueous humor drainage through the primary outflow pathway in the eye, which is...

Eyelid aging: pathophysiology and clinical management
ABSTRACTLife expectancy is increasing in most countries. With increasing age, many individuals may develop involutional ophthalmic diseases, such as eyelid aging. Dermatochalasis, ptosis, ectropion, and entropion are common disorders in middle-aged and older adults. This review outlines the pathophysiology and clinical management of these involutional eyelid disorders. Recently, a decrease in elastic fibers with ultrastructural abnormalities and an overexpression of elastin-degrading enzymes have been demonstrated in involutional ectropion and entropion. This may be the consequence of local ischemia, inflammation, and/or c...

Evaluation of 2-year outcomes following intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) for aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity
Conclusions:The study demonstrated that IVB monotherapy can be useful in the treatment of APROP. The decreased incidence of early unfavorable refractive and functional outcomes in the IVB group compared with the laser group showed a potential benefit for patients treated with IVB, and this needs to be better evaluated in future prospective studies.RESUMOObjetivo:Avaliar a evolução de 2 anos em crianças que receberam bevacizumab intravítreo (IVB) como monoterapia para retinopatia da prematuridade posterior agressiva (APROP).Métodos:Arquivos médicos de 40 crianças foram revisa...

Comparison of 1% cyclosporine eye drops in olive oil and in linseed oil to treat experimentally-induced keratoconjunctivitis sicca in rabbits
ABSTRACTPurpose:To evaluate the effectiveness of topical 1% cyclosporine eye drops diluted in either of the two vehicles-olive and linseed oil-and that of the oils themselves in treating experimentally-induced keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in rabbits. Methods:KCS was induced in 25 New Zealand rabbits using 1% atropine sulfate eye drops for 7 days before treatment and throughout the treatment period (12 weeks). The rabbits were divided into five groups: one control (C) group without KCS induction and four treatment groups in which KCS was induced and treated topically with olive oil (O), linseed oil (L), cyclosporine in o...
