Letter to the editor: bilateral acute angle closure in a patient with dengue
We present a rare case of bilateral angle-closure glaucoma associated with pseudoplateau iris due to multiple ciliary cysts and conducted a systematic review of the literature to find similar case reports published between November 2006 and November 2016. Only 19 case reports present treatment modalities, and most cases required more than one therapeutic approach for controlling the intraocular pressure. Pseudoplateau iris attributed to iridociliary cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with narrow angles, particularly those with ocular hypertension and glaucoma, in which management is comple...

Chorioretinitis sclopetaria caused by an intraorbital metallic foreign body
ABSTRACT A 44-year-old man was referred for evaluation of pain and temporal floaters after receiving a rebounded bullet impact to his right eye. Typical funduscopic findings, together with the confirmed presence of an intraorbital metallic foreign body, led to the diagnosis of chorioretinitis sclopetaria. Conservative management was performed as no severe symptoms were observed. The favorable clinical outcome was confirmed in subsequent reviews. Chorioretinitis sclopetaria is characterized by a proliferative chorioretinal inflammation as a consequence of the expansive wave caused by the entrance of a bullet between the eye...

Evaluation of a birth-related foveal hemorrhage in an infant using optical coherence tomography
ABSTRACT During the routine ophthalmologic examination of a 38-day old female infant, indirect ophthalmoscopy revealed a dense hemorrhage on the fovea and a couple of superficial hemorrhages in the nasal retina of the left eye. No hemorrhage was observed in the right eye. A hand-held spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was used at the time of diagnosis. The hemorrhage at the nasal retina resolved in the first week of follow-up, and the foveal hemorrhage resolved 12 weeks after birth. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography was repeated once the foveal hemorrhage had resorbed, and it showed that the f...

In vivo confocal microstructural analysis of corneas presenting Kayser-Fleischer rings in patients with Wilson's disease
Conclusions: In vivo confocal microscopy is a useful tool for evaluating the corneal microstructure when a Kayser-Fleischer ring is clinically present. The ring consists of granular, bright particles that increase in density toward Descemet's membrane, and is associated with a decreased number of keratocytes and peculiar dark, round areas in all stromal layers, probably a sign of corneal damage. When the ring is not visible in subjects with Wilson's disease, changes to the corneal microstructure are insignificant.RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar, ao n ível microestrutural, através de microscopia confocal in vivo a la...

The study of the use of a latex biomembrane and conjunctival autograft in rabbit conjunctiva wound healing
Conclusion: Although healing was slower with a latex biomembrane, tissue reconstitution was almost the same as that with a conjunctival autograft by three weeks. A latex biomembrane is as effective as a conjunctival autograft for the reconstruction of the ocular surface. Owing to the lack of toxicity and allergenicity, a latex biomembrane appears to be a promising therapeutic option for conjunctival reconstruction. (Source: Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia)
