Analysis of the perfusion of the optic nerve using angio-OCT in glaucoma.
Authors: Hervás A, García-Delpech S, Udaondo P Abstract The introduction of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) has generated interest in evaluating vascular dysfunctions in the optic nerve head for the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. The purpose of this study is to compare perfusion of the optic disc between normal subjects and subjects with glaucoma using OCT-A in order to detect changes in perfusion of the optic disc. Using the OCT-A AngioVue® system, an examination was performed on 40 eyes of 40 patients (20 with glaucoma and 20 healthy controls). Total radial peripapillary ...

Anterior Uveal Fungal Abscess in an HIV Positive Patient.
Authors: Budmann GA, Parisi FB, Ortiz GB, Cirillo MP, Catalano C, Lávaque EB Abstract Endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) accounts for approximately 2% to 8% of all cases of endophthalmitis. Candida albicans abscesses in the iris and ciliary body are a rare form of presentation, with only 3 cases reported up to now. A 27- year-old woman presented an elevated lesion in the iris root of her left eye, associated with 4 + cells in the anterior chamber, hypopyon and pupillary membrane. Tests for syphilis and HIV were positive, associated with extraocular manifestations of secondary syphilis. Treatment with intravenou...

Differences in intermediate vision: monofocal intraocular lenses vs. monofocal extended depth of focus intraocular lenses.
Authors: de Luis Eguileor B, Martínez-Indart L, Martínez Alday N, Sacristán Egüén C, Cuadros Sánchez C Abstract PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyse whether an extended depth of focus (EDOF) monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) (TECNIS Eyhance™, Johnson&Johnson Surgical Vision, Inc., Santa Ana, CA) provides better intermediate visual acuity (VA) than another monofocal IOL (TECNIS 1-piece™, Johnson&Johnson Surgical Vision, Inc., Santa Ana, CA) from the same platform. Vittaforma Corneae keratoconjunctivitis: An emerging pathology among travelers returning from Southeast Asia.
We present the case of a 29 year old woman who started with pain, redness and blurred vision after a holiday in Singapore and did not respond to conjunctivitis treatment. PCR sequencing and PAS staining of corneal epithelial biopsy identified Vittaforma corneae as the causative organism. Treatment was initiated with corneal debridement, oral albendazol, and intensive topical voriconazole, levofloxacin and propamidine, but the conjunctival and corneal disease was only resolved 5 months later with the introduction of topical steroids to treat her severe limbitis. Suspicion of Microsporidium keratoconjunctivitis should be rai...

Central retinal artery occlusion as a post-transfusion complication of red blood cells.
Authors: Ortiz Zapata A, Ortiz Farfán I, Zapata Díaz G, Ortiz Zapata J, Peralta M Abstract A 32-year-old woman presented with a history of uterine myomatosis and repeated bleeding for 6 months. This produced a haemoglobin concentration of 6.5 g/dL, with a requirement for a red blood cell transfusion. One hour after the transfusion, she presented with a sudden and painless loss of vision in the right eye (RE). As she had no other symptoms, she was referred to the Neuro-Ophthalmology Department. On admission, her corrected visual acuity was hand movement in RE, and 0.6 in the left eye (LE). The ant...

Ocular surface analysis in patients diagnosed with X-linked ichthyosis.
Authors: Domínguez-Serrano FB, Caro-Magdaleno M, Mataix-Albert B, Molina-Solana P, Montero-Iruzubieta J, Rodríguez-de-la-Rúa E Abstract Seven patients (14 eyes) diagnosed with X-linked ichthyosis were studied using the Schirmer test, biomicroscopy, tonometry, endothelial count, optical coherence tomography, Pentacam®, ocular surface analyser, and confocal microscopy. The mean age was 33.83±20.17 years (range: 7-64 years). The most frequent findings in biomicroscopy were Meibomian glands dysfunction (83.3%) and stromal corneal opacities (33%). Atypical toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis in patients with malignant hematological diseases.
We report a case series of atypical toxoplasmic retinocoroiditis in patients with malignant hematological diseases who are usually immunosuppressed. Four patients were diagnosed of atypical toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis, all of them had immunosuppression (100%) and half of them (50%) had received a bone marrow transplant. The polymerase chain reaction for toxoplasma was positive in 75% of cases, and in one case (25%) the diagnosis was made with clinical and serological criteria. One patient presented ocular toxoplasmosis despite being on prophylactic treatment with atovaquone. Patients with atypical ocular toxoplasmosis an...

We present a case of a 34-year-old woman referred to the Ophthalmology Department with visual discomfort, headaches, and pulsatile tinnitus of two months onset. In the physical examination there was bilateral blurring of the optic disc margin with absence of spontaneous venous pulsation. The diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension was made by lumbar puncture with the measurement of the opening pressure, and due to the findings of the magnetic resonance scan of the brain and orbits. The optic nerve drusen was an incidental finding in an optical coherence tomography angiography, which would later be confirmed with ...

Primary conjunctival amyloidosis and allergic conjunctivitis.
Authors: Romero-Caballero MD, Pozo-Lorenzo FJ, Berrio-Campos R, Quilez-Franco P, Pastor-Quirante FA Abstract Primary conjunctival amyloidosis is a rare disease of unknown origin, secondary to the deposit of amyloid material within the conjunctiva itself, producing a tumour. In the case presented, the concurrence of allergic conjunctivitis and chronic eye scratching could be triggers of the excessive production of immunoglobulins. The deposit of insoluble immunoglobulin light chains located within the conjunctiva itself causes this conjunctival mass. PMID: 32616371 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Ar...
