Retinitis pigmentosa as a clinical presentation of LCHAD deficiency: A clinical case and review of the literature.
Authors: García García LC, Zamorano Martín F, Rocha de Lossada C, García Lorente M, Luque Aranda G, Escudero Gómez J Abstract Long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency is a rare metabolic disease caused by a specific mutation in the HADHA gene, which leads to an alteration in the metabolic pathway of fatty acids. Its most frequent form of presentation at the ophthalmological level is retinitis pigmentosa, and in some cases the ophthalmologist could be the first one to alert the other paediatric specialties to carry out a multidisciplinary approach to the case. The case...

A new standardised nomenclature in ophthalmology: Criteria and quantitative evaluation indicators of medical procedures.
CONCLUSIONS: The new standardised ophthalmological nomenclature updates and improves the old classification, adapting the procedures to the descriptors included in the ICD-9-CM, and incorporating all the new techniques. Additionally, the declaration of the general principles allows defining new criteria, quantitative indicators, rating scales, and algorithms to calculate fees for medical procedures. The use of optical coherence tomography in the evaluation of patients with bipolar disorder.
Authors: Gavín A, Garcia-Martin E, Garcia-Campayo J, Viladés E, Orduna E, Satué M Abstract Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental disorder characterised by episodes of extremal mood changes. In recent years, some researchers found neurodegeneration in patients with BD using Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Evaluation of the optic nerve and the retinal layers using optical coherence tomography (OCT) has proved to be a useful, non-invasive tool for diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases. Accordingly, a decrease in the retinal nerve fibre layer and the ganglion cell complex measured by OCT w...

Update on the management of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy.
Authors: Moreno-Morillo FJ, Fernández-Vigo JI, Güemes-Villahoz N, Burgos-Blasco B, López-Guajardo L, Donate-López J Abstract Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is one of the main causes of impaired visual acuity in patients younger than 60 years. Its pathophysiology remains partially unknown, although it has been postulated that choroidal hyper-permeability may be involved. This typically produces a neurosensory retinal detachment and/or a detachment of the retinal pigment epithelium in the posterior pole. Although acute CSC generally does not require treatment, when chronic it must be...

Multimodal imaging in acute idiopathic blind spot enlargement syndrome.
Authors: Moll-Udina A, Hernanz I, Dotti M, Llorenç V, Adán A Abstract Two cases are reported of acute idiopathic blind spot enlargement syndrome (AIBSE) that presented with peripapillary white spots in the fundus. AIBSE belongs to the acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR) complex. Conditions of this AZOOR complex may overlap. Typically, in AIBSE, a peripapillary hyperautofluorescence is seen in the autofluorescence. En-face OCT angiography at the ellipsoid level showed hyper-reflective spots around the optic disk in both cases. One case showed a reversible enlargement of the blind spot in visua...

Posterior bilateral lens luxation in an agitated patient: Cause or consequence?
We report the uncommon case of a 70-year-old woman with evidence of a posterior bilateral dislocation of the lens in the context of an acute onset of confusional syndrome. We discuss about sensory deprivation as a trigger for acute confusion and agitation in patients with predisposing conditions. In addition, we describe the benefits that, in our experience, the refloating technique with perfluorocarbon liquid provides for the surgical approach to these cases. The cornea is, by far, one of the most transplanted tissues worldwide due to the immune privilege of this tissue, as well as the advances in microsurgery, existence of cornea banks, preservation of corneas, and use of anti-rejection therapy. However, many patients with successful corneal transplants (with clear corneas) experience poor vision in the post-operat...
