Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDown syndrome (DS) is associated with certain structural and functional disorders in the whole visual system. The purpose was to compare retinal and choroidal thickness using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in DS subjects with controls. This cross-sectional study included 100 eyes of 52 DS subjects and 78 eyes of 39 matching age and axial length controls. Our results showed that inner or outer retinal and ganglionar thickness showed no significant differences between DS and control gr...

Prevalence and risk factors to develop ocular hypertension and glaucoma after penetrating keratoplasty
CONCLUSIONS: Ocular hypertension and glaucoma had a high prevalence after penetrating keratoplasty, and the association factors were similar to those reported in other international studies. Congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium associated with acquired retinoschisis and microcystic degeneration: The importance of multimodal imaging
We present an illustrated clinical case with multimodal representation of a congenital hypertrophy of the depigmented retinal pigment epithelium (CHRPE) associated with acquired retinoschisis and microcystic degeneration (MD) in a 64-year-old hypermetropic, asymptomatic woman. Retinography showed a whitish lesion with pigmented edges, slightly raised, accompanied by a lower area with a microcystic pattern. The complementary tests carried out allowed to determine a well-defined diagnosis of exclusion. B-mode ultrasound showed a smooth, cupuliform and cystic elevation characteristic of acquired retinoschisis, and fluorescein...

Optic neuropathy by ethambutol in a patient with multiple sclerosis
We present the clinical case of a patient who developed a toxic optic neuropathy due to ethambutol in the context of a tuberculosis reactivation and who also had a personal history of multiple sclerosis. The objective is to highlight the importance of making a good differential diagnosis of this adverse effect and of knowing its main clinical, campimetric and tomographic manifestations and characteristics. Furthermore, since the reversibility of damage is still discussed in the literature, early diagnosis is essential. For this purpose, it is important to inform the patient of the possible symptoms and to carry out an opht...

Intravascular papillary endotelial hiperplasia, the unusual diagnosis of an orbital mass
We describe the clinical and histological findings of intravascular papillary endotelial hyperplasia in the left lower lid of a 72-year-old woman who had a painless mass since 15 years ago, that caused hypertropia of her left eye. Histopathological examination revealed intralesional calcification, which is not an usual feature in this entity. Smart contact lens: a promising therapeutic tool in aniridia
CONCLUSIONS: This article demonstrates by means of optical simulations the concept of an intelligent artificial iris platform encapsulated in a scleral contact lens and its possible application in patients with aniridia. Furthermore, it allows us to anticipate possible visual results in clinical trials with healthy patients (after application of mydriatic agents) and in patients with aniridia. The results demonstrate a better visual quality and a decrease in retinal illumination.PMID:33627237 | DOI:10.1016/j.oftal.2021.01.005 (Source: Archivos de la Sociedad Espanola de Oftalmologia)

Crystalline lens alterations in congenital aniridia
Arch Soc Esp Oftalmol. 2021 Feb 18:S0365-6691(21)00028-9. doi: 10.1016/j.oftal.2020.12.016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCongenital aniridia is a rare genetic disease associated with mutations in the PAX6 gene. Changes in the lens in aniridia can be alterations of size and shape, of position - which generally reveal zonular weakness and determines subluxation of the lens - and mainly changes in transparency, cataracts, with variable morphology of polar, cortical, subcapsular, lamellar, and more rarely, nuclear cataract. Visual acuity and quality of vision in patients with congenital aniridia complicated by cataracts can b...
