Management of the neovascular choroidal membrane secondary to ocular toxoplasmosis.
Authors: Martín García E, Chávarri García JJ, Rodríguez Vicente L, Jiménez Del Río B, Guallar Leza SM, Del Río Mayor JL Abstract A 12-year-old patient diagnosed with congenital toxoplasmosis, with no systemic treatment at the time, who presented with a decreased visual acuity (VA) in his left eye (LE). On examination, VA in the LE was 0.05 and the fundus examination revealed a focus of chorioretinitis adjacent to a pigmented macular scar, as well as a large associated subretinal haemorrhage. After confirming the diagnosis of choroidal neovascular membrane seco...

Sensitivity and specificity of the red reflex in Costa Rican newborns.
CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal screening with the red reflex is not sufficient to detect intraocular disease. A normal neonatal red reflex does no exclude intraocular disease. It has a specificity of nearly 90%, but its sensitivity is only 56%. Most retinal haemorrhages are undiagnosed as they cannot be detected with a red reflex. New therapeutic targets in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration.
Authors: Muñoz-Ramón PV, Hernández Martínez P, Muñoz-Negrete FJ Abstract Age-related macular degeneration and especially neovascular age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of low vision in developed countries. Even though the introduction of anti-VEGF drugs in recent years completely changed the management of this condition, its cost, the need for repeated intravitreal injections, and loss of efficacy in the long term are still issues to deal with. Currently, a new generation of novel therapies under development is attempting to address some of these limitations. So...

Amniotic membrane, clinical applications and tissue engineering. Review of its ophthalmic use.
Authors: Lacorzana J Abstract The use of amniotic membrane in ophthalmology has been increasing in recent years due to its multiple biological and tectonic properties, improvement in the process of obtaining, ease of use, and advancement in tissue engineering. The amniotic membrane has become one of the main adjuvant treatments, in ophthalmic surgery as well as in other medical-surgical specialties. The development of tissue engineering has allowed it to be used, not only in its classic form, but also by the use of drops and other presentations. The different steps prior to its use (preparation and conservation), t...

Delayed infectious keratitis in a patient with radial keratotomy and floppy eyelid syndrome treated with simple interrupted stitches.
Authors: Rahhal-Ortuño M, Fernández-Santodomingo AS, Hurtado-Sarrió M Abstract A 55-year-old male presented with an infectious keratitis in his left eye, affecting one of the incisions of the radial keratotomy he had undergone thirty-four years ago. Suturing the incision with two simple interrupted stitches was key to the resolution of the infection. Floppy eyelid syndrome was also found in this patient. Could this act as a risk factor for infectious keratitis in radial keratotomy? To our knowledge, this is the first reported case describing the association between both conditions, and the seco...

Funduscopy showed a solitary choroidal lesion in her left eye, as well as extraocular lesions suggesting disseminated tuberculosis. A favourable outcome was achieved after quadruple antibiotic course and cortisone therapy. Changes in ocular motility in Kabuki syndrome.
Authors: Del Cerro I, Merino P, Gómez de Liaño P, Alan G Abstract Kabuki syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, caused by mutation in the KMT2D or KDM6A genes, which affects several organs in the majority of patients, among which are the eyes. The most typical clinical characteristics are mental retardation, postnatal growth retardation, skeletal anomalies, and characteristic facial features. As the eyes are affected in most of the cases, ophthalmological examination is recommended for the early detection of ocular anomalies, in order to prevent visual impairment. The most frequent ocular signs are stra...

Unexplained ocular and visual symptoms: The need for a psychosomatic approach in Ophthalmology.
Authors: Arntz A, Ibañez C, Covarrubias T Abstract INTRODUCTION: Psychogenic causes for some somatic symptoms have been widely recognised. In Ophthalmology however, there are few studies that address this issue, and current Ophthalmology Training Programs do not include formal teaching in Psychosomatics. Psychosomatic phenomena in ophthalmology are probably under-diagnosed, which may reduce therapeutic effectiveness, decrease patient and physician satisfaction, and increase health costs due to multiple consultations and prescriptions. The aims of this study were to describe patients with unexplained visual/o...
