The outcome of surgical treatment in advanced glaucoma.
Authors: El Afrit MA, Saadouli D, Hachicha G, Ben Mansour K, El Afrit N, Yahyaoui S Abstract INTRODUCTION: There is uncertainty regarding the outcomes of glaucoma surgery for patients with advanced glaucoma, because it may be associated with the «wipe out» phenomenon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of surgical treatment in advanced glaucoma. METHODS: This retrospective study included 67eyes of 49 patients with end-stage glaucoma in which glaucoma surgery was carried out. The clinical records prior to and after surgery were reviewed. Follow up period was 14.4months. RESULTS: Th...

Atypical toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis in patients with malignant hematological diseases.
We report a case series of atypical toxoplasmic retinocoroiditis in patients with malignant hematological diseases who are usually immunosuppressed. Four patients were diagnosed of atypical toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis, all of them had immunosuppression (100%) and half of them (50%) had received a bone marrow transplant. The polymerase chain reaction for toxoplasma was positive in 75% of cases, and in one case (25%) the diagnosis was made with clinical and serological criteria. One patient presented ocular toxoplasmosis despite being on prophylactic treatment with atovaquone. Patients with atypical ocular toxoplasmosis an...

Coexistence of idiopathic intracranial hypertension and optic disc drusen in a latin american patient: case report.
We present a case of a 34-year-old woman referred to the Ophthalmology Department with visual discomfort, headaches, and pulsatile tinnitus of two months onset. In the physical examination there was bilateral blurring of the optic disc margin with absence of spontaneous venous pulsation. The diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension was made by lumbar puncture with the measurement of the opening pressure, and due to the findings of the magnetic resonance scan of the brain and orbits. The optic nerve drusen was an incidental finding in an optical coherence tomography angiography, which would later be confirmed with ...

Authors: Ruiz-Arranz C, Reche-Sainz JA, de Uña-Iglesias MC, Ortueta-Olartecoechea A, Muñoz-Gallego A, Ferro-Osuna M Abstract Herpes zoster ophthalmicus usually presents with ocular manifestations, but neurological complications are much more infrequent. An 84-year-old woman with herpes zoster of the left first trigeminal branch developed herpetic keratouveitis in her left eye despite treatment with oral valaciclovir. Seven days later, a progressive and total left ophthalmoplegia appeared, requiring hospital admission and intravenous treatment with acyclovir and corticosteroids. The neuroimaging was su...

Primary conjunctival amyloidosis and allergic conjunctivitis.
Authors: Romero-Caballero MD, Pozo-Lorenzo FJ, Berrio-Campos R, Quilez-Franco P, Pastor-Quirante FA Abstract Primary conjunctival amyloidosis is a rare disease of unknown origin, secondary to the deposit of amyloid material within the conjunctiva itself, producing a tumour. In the case presented, the concurrence of allergic conjunctivitis and chronic eye scratching could be triggers of the excessive production of immunoglobulins. The deposit of insoluble immunoglobulin light chains located within the conjunctiva itself causes this conjunctival mass. PMID: 32616371 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Ar...
