Lifestyle modification and risk factor control in the prevention and treatment of atrial fibrillation
Arch Cardiol Mex. 2024 Feb 21. doi: 10.24875/ACM.22000236. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent arrhythmia and is related with significant morbidity, mortality and costs. In spite of relevant advances in the prevention of embolic events and rhythm control, little has been done to reduce its prevalence, progression and impact, since it increases with ageing as well as with common risk factors such as alcohol intake, tobacco use and stress as well as with arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, sleep apnea, kidney failure, chronic pulmonary obstructive disease, ischemi...

Influence of sexual hormones on Chagas disease
CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that testosterone increased infection severity, whereas estradiol had the opposite effect. This research improves the understanding of sex hormones´infuence upon this infection to contribute with the handling of Chagas´disease.PMID:38377617 | DOI:10.24875/ACM.23000018 (Source: Archivos de Cardiologia de Mexico)

Circulatory support with venovenous ECMO in a patient with reperfusion pulmonary edema after pulmonary artery thromboendarterectomy
We present the case of a 60-year-old woman with a history of acute pulmonary embolism due to deep vein thrombosis of the right pelvic limb who was diagnosed later with CTEPH who was admitted for scheduled surgical treatment involving bilateral PTE. However, during the immediate postoperative period, she developed cardiogenic shock and refractory hypoxemia secondary to pulmonary reperfusion syndrome following the surgical procedure. As a result, she required veno-venous ECMO circulatory support for 6 days, leading to resolution of the pulmonary condition and clinical improvement.PMID:38359441 | DOI:10.24875/ACM.23000142 (So...

The current state of renal sympathetic denervation in hypertension
Arch Cardiol Mex. 2024 Feb 15. doi: 10.24875/ACM.23000191. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis review provides an overview of the efficacy and safety of renal sympathetic denervation as a therapeutic approach for resistant hypertension. While the initial enthusiasm was sparked by the results of early clinical trials, it was dampened by the findings of the Symplicity HTN-3 study. However, recent advances in catheter technology and more refined patient selection criteria have yielded more promising results. Subsequent studies, such as SPYRAL HTN-OFF MED and RADIANCE II, demonstrated significant reductions in blood pressure, e...
