The Moderating Effects of HIV Relevant Factors on the Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence and Intention to Start HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Among Cisgender Women
This study of cisgender women eligible for HIV PrEP took place between 2017 and 2019 in Philadelphia and New York City. This study aimed to examine the relationship between four types of IPV (control, psychological, physical, sexual) and intention to start PrEP among PrEP-eligible cisgender women and assess the extent to which HIV relevant factors moderated the association between IPV experience and intention to start PrEP. In this sample of PrEP-eligible women (n = 214), 68.7% indicated intention to start PrEP in the next 3 months. Ethnicity was strongly associated with intention to start PrEP, with Hispanic women having ...

Tarlov Cysts and Premature Ejaculation
We report a rare case of a sacral cyst resulting in premature ejaculation in a 32-year-old man who presented with pelvic pain and acquired premature ejaculation. Spinal nerve root decompression, excision of intraspinal Tarlov cyst, and spinal nerve root adhesion release surgery significantly improved his pain and premature ejaculation at a six-month follow-up.PMID:38366312 | DOI:10.1007/s10508-024-02815-7 (Source: Archives of Sexual Behavior)

Patterns of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication During Sex
This study adds to the existing research regarding patterns of communication surrounding sex and during sex through qualitative analysis. Further, this inquiry focused on participants' full histories, rather than their tendencies within any current relationship. We analyzed 78 qualitative interview transcripts from participants between the ages of 18 and 69. Participants reported a reluctance to communicate anything but pleasure, discomfort, or dislike during sex to avoid discouraging their partners. Though participants reported a perception that communicating pleasure served as encouragement and affirmation to their partn...

Racialized Migrant Transgender Women Engaged in Sex Work: Double Binds and Identifications with the Community
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Feb 12. doi: 10.1007/s10508-023-02804-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRacialized migrant transgender women engaged in sex work represent an understudied population. They face unique challenges resulting from their multiple marginalized identities, such as racialized transmisogyny. Since marginalized communities play a vital role in mitigating systemic stigma, it is essential to expand the literature on the community of this population. The present study used the frameworks of gender minority stress and intersectionality, along with a decolonial and transfeminist approach. Twenty participants aged betw...

Sexual Attraction and Non-Suicidal Self-Harm: The Role of Stressors and Psychological Mediators
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Feb 12. doi: 10.1007/s10508-023-02792-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-suicidal self-harm (NSSH) is a serious concern for the well-being of youth. Stressors relate to greater NSSH risk, such as being non-heterosexual in a heteronormative society. Other stressors may include traumatic experiences. These relationships may be mediated by psychological factors (depressed mood, anxiety, anger, and self-esteem) as well as contextual factors (support from parents and peers). The purpose of this study was to examine NSHH ideation and behavior among Icelandic youth, as well as relationships with stressors a...

A Dress Is Not a Yes: Towards an Indirect Mouse-Tracking Measure of Men's Overreliance on Global Cues in the Context of Sexual Flirting
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Feb 7. doi: 10.1007/s10508-023-02798-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAssessing another person's intention to flirt and, relatedly, their sexual interest is based on the interpretation and weighting of global (e.g., clothing style) and specific (e.g., facial expression) cues. Since cue incongruency increases the risk of erroneous judgments and thus can entail undesirable outcomes for both parties involved, detection of an individual propensity for overly relying on global (sexual) rather than specific (affective) cues is of social and clinical-forensic importance. Using a purpose-designed and pre-valid...

Associations Between Negative Body Image and Sexual Health Practices in Emerging Adults from Malaysia
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Feb 6. doi: 10.1007/s10508-024-02810-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPast findings on the association between negative body image and sexual health behaviors have been mixed and mostly derived from Western samples. The aim of the current study was to examine associations between indices of negative body image and sexual health practices that reduce the risk of disease transmission in emerging adults, and whether these associations are moderated by gender. Using an online survey, a convenience sample of 584 Malaysian adults aged 18-30 years (230 men, 354 women) completed measures of satisfaction with o...

Empirically Assessing the Effectiveness of the Pathways Programme: An Online Self-Help Intervention for Male Sexual Aggression at UK Universities
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Feb 5. doi: 10.1007/s10508-024-02808-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThough contemporary evidence suggests that upwards of one-in-nine UK male university students engage in sexually violent behaviors (Hales and Gannon in Sexual Abuse 34:744-770, 2022), few evidence-based primary prevention strategies have been developed to prevent their perpetration. To help contribute to this evidence gap, this study evaluated the short and longer-term effectiveness of a novel psychoeducation-based online self-help intervention for university male sexual aggression called The Pathways Programme. Designed around curre...

LGBTQ Young Adults' Identity Disclosure in the Workplace: A Longitudinal Qualitative Analysis of Disclosure Intentions and Outcomes
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Feb 2. doi: 10.1007/s10508-024-02807-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch shows that LGBTQ workers make strategic decisions about whether to disclose their sexual and gender identities to their colleagues as they assess potential costs and benefits. The present study sought to extend this literature by examining how they plan their identity disclosure in future workplace interactions and why they may diverge from their initial intentions. The analysis used longitudinal data from in-depth interviews, in which young LGBTQ workers reported disclosure intentions and their outcomes two years later. Par...

Shifting Norms and Value Conflicts: Exploring the Effects of HIV Status Disclosure Fields in Sex-Social Apps
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Feb 1. doi: 10.1007/s10508-023-02801-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSex-social applications used by men who have sex with men (MSM) often provide options to disclose HIV status to encourage more positive language and reduce stigma. Yet, little research has sought to understand how in-app disclosure fields impact on disclosure motivation. We interviewed MSM living with HIV and those who self-reported being HIV-negative ([Formula: see text]) in the UK and applied a hierarchical model of motivation to interpret our data. We found conflicting motivations for disclosure and point to HIV status disclosure ...

Auditory Cues Alter the Magnitude and Valence of Subjective Sexual Arousal and Desire Induced by an Erotic Video
This study asked whether ratings of subjective sexual arousal and desire using the Sexual Arousal and Desire Inventory (SADI) would be altered if this ending was present or absent, and whether including or excluding the accompanying soundtrack would influence the magnitude and direction of the responses. A total of 119 cis-gendered heterosexual undergraduates (59 women and 60 men) viewed an 11-min sexually explicit heterosexual video that ended with a 15-s ejaculation scene. Two versions of the video were created, one with the ejaculatory ending (E+) and one without (E-). Participants were assigned randomly to view one of ...
