Improving investment in chronic disease care in Sub-Saharan Africa is crucial for the achievement of SDG 3.4: application of the chronic care model
AbstractOver 41  million people die of chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) each year, accounting for 71% of all global deaths. The burden of CNCD is specifically a problem in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) since CNCDs are largely a leading major cause of mortality in the sub-region. While the disease burden and mo rtality from chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) have reached an epidemic threshold in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), health systems, policy-makers and individuals still consider CNCDs to be uncommon and, therefore, do not give its management the required attention. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), eff ectively add...

Expanding citizen engagement in the secondary use of health data: an opportunity for national health data access bodies to realise the intentions of the European health data space
AbstractThe European Health Data Space (EHDS) aims to make the primary use of health data for healthcare provision more continuous, effective, and (cost) efficient. Moreover, it pursues to facilitate the secondary use of health data for purposes such as research, innovation, and policy making. In the context of secondary use, the EHDS legislative proposal (published on 3 May 2022) argues that Member States should develop Health Data Access Bodies (HDABs) whose responsibilities include facilitating the secondary use of health data, issuing data permits, and implementing high levels of accountability and security. In Belgium...

The quality of care index for low back pain: a systematic analysis of the global burden of disease study 1990 –2017
Conclusion. Despite improvements in the quality of care for low back pain in low and lower-middle-income countries between 1990 and 2017, there is still a large gap between these countries and higher-income countries. Continued steps must be taken to reduce healthcare barriers in these countries. (Source: Archives of Public Health)

Infodemic: Challenges and solutions in topic discovery and data process
ConclusionsThis review found that Infodemic is a rapidly growing research area that attracts the interest of researchers from different disciplines. The number of studies in this field has increased significantly in recent years, with researchers from different countries, including the United States, India, and China. Infodemic topic discovery, data collection, and data preparation are not easy, and each step faces different challenges. While there is some research in this emerging field, there are still many challenges that need to be addressed. These findings highlight the need for more articles to address these issues a...

The association between Urban and Rural Resident Basic Medical Insurance and instrumental activity of daily living disability among middle-aged and older adults in China
ConclusionThis study finds that the middle-aged and older adults who were covered by URRBMI had a reduced possibility of suffering from IADL disability when compared with those without URRBMI. Furthermore, it is found that URRBMI produced a statistically stronger effect on IADL disability for the older adults when compared with the middle-aged adults. Moreover, we obtain evidence indicating that physical exercise was a channel involving the effect of URRBMI on IADL disability. (Source: Archives of Public Health)

Determinants for participation in a prevention and early detection programme for children and adolescents in Germany: does social background play a role?
AbstractEarly detection examinations and prevention are particularly important in childhood and adolescence, as certain diseases are already developing and health-related attitudes and behaviour patterns are formed and implemented. Despite the importance of screening and prevention, not all families use the available services and programmes. The aim of this study is to identify factors associated with participation in an early detection and prevention programme for children and adolescents, as well as factors associated with actual uptake of an examination. The analyses are based on questionnaire data of an online survey o...

Investigating years of life lost in Belgium, 2004 –2019: A comprehensive analysis using a probabilistic redistribution approach
ConclusionThe redistribution process assigned a specific cause of death to all deaths in Belgium, making it possible to investigate the full mortality burden for the first time. A large number of estimates were produced to estimate SEYLL by age, sex, and region for a large number of causes of death and every year between 2004 and 2019. These estimates are important stepping stones for future investigations on Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) in Belgium. (Source: Archives of Public Health)

Prevalence of dementia, heart disease and stroke in community-dwelling adults in Canada, 2016 –2021: opportunities for joint prevention
ConclusionRecent increases in the prevalence of dementia, heart disease and stroke in Canadian communities threaten to reverse any gains in vascular disease prevention over the past six years. Findings reveal the urgent need for intensified prevention efforts that are community-based with a focus on joint reduction in the shared risk factors contributing to all three diseases.
