Preliminary Evidence to Support the use of Startle Adjuvant Rehabilitation Therapy (START) via tele-health sessions to promote accessibility and reduce socioeconomic disparities in post-stroke care
Investment in the development of novel tools that make therapy more accessible to individuals with low socioeconomic status who are more likely to have a stroke and to have severe upper extremity dysfunction post-stroke are needed. Startle Adjuvant Rehabilitation Therapy (START), a tele-enabled, low-cost treatment to improve therapy outcomes for stroke survivors is the application of a startling, acoustic stimulus (via headphones) administered in conjunction with traditional therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine if START can be used to enhance movement of the upper extremity. (Source: Archives of Physical Med...

Preliminary Results of a Pilot Clinical Trial Using a Reimbursable Form of Constraint-induced Movement Therapy: The Keys Treatment protocol
Examine changes in use of the affected upper extremity (UE), motor function, depression, and quality of life (QOL) after an 8-week distributed form of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) called the Keys Treatment protocol and investigate if an intensified 4-week version is as effective as the 8-week intervention. Robot-aided assessment of ankle position and motion sense acuity in chronic stroke
More than half of the people affected by stroke experience deficits in lower limb proprioception which compromises balance and gait. Currently, objective data on the extent of ankle motion sense impairment post-stroke are lacking. Further, the prevalence of common motion and position sense deficits remains unclear. Thus, this study examined ankle position and motion sense acuity in people with chronic stroke and healthy controls. (Source: Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Peer Support Experiences and Needs after a Traumatic Injury: A Qualitative Study of Patient, Caregiver, and Healthcare Provider Perspectives
Traumatic injuries significantly impact individuals ’ physical and mental health and are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Trauma recovery is complex and entails patients interacting with multiple places of care before returning to the community. Despite trauma recovery being optimized when patients’ psychosocial needs are addressed early on and throughout recovery, care remains overwhelmingly focused on physical and functional improvement. Peer support is a cost-effective way of providing emotionally and experientially-driven psychosocial support that complements usual patient care. (Source: Archives of Physica...

Health Action Process Approach and Spinal Cord Injury: A Scoping Review
People with spinal cord injury (PwSCI) are at increased risk of low physical activity and exercise, and as such experience increased risk for disease and premature death. The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) is effective to explain modifiable health behaviors and guide intervention among the general population. As such, the current scoping review has two aims: (1) to investigate the application of HAPA among PwSCI, and (2) to make recommendations for rehabilitation research and practice.
