Evaluation of selected factors influencing sleep disorders in paramedics during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: The main factors influencing the development of sleep disorders were female gender, use of sleep aids and not having a life partner. In contrast, older age and longer job tenure, being married, and having good relationships with family members had a protective effect.PMID:38414468 | PMC:PMC10895942 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/169909 (Source: Archives of Medical Science)

Trends of ischemic heart disease mortality attributable to smoking in the five countries with the highest number of smokers during 1990-2019: an age-period-cohort analysis
CONCLUSIONS: From 1990 to 2019, mortality from IHD caused by smoking showed a downward trend in these five countries. However, the pattern of increased mortality from IHD in women caused by smoking warrants further study.PMID:38414476 | PMC:PMC10895949 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/182886 (Source: Archives of Medical Science)

Association of leptin receptor gene Gln223Arg polymorphism with insulin resistance and hyperglycemia in patients with metabolic syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Gln223Arg polymorphism of the leptin receptor gene may be a marker of predisposition to insulin resistance in the Kyrgyz population. Further studies are necessary to confirm these results in populations from other regions.PMID:38414477 | PMC:PMC10895948 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/170121 (Source: Archives of Medical Science)

Position paper of the Polish Expert Group on the use of pitavastatin in the treatment of lipid disorders in Poland endorsed by the Polish Lipid Association
Arch Med Sci. 2023 Nov 26;20(1):28-42. doi: 10.5114/aoms/175879. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTLipid disorders, primarily hypercholesterolemia, are the most common cardiovascular (CV) risk factor in Poland (this applies even 3/4 of people). The low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) serum level is the basic lipid parameter that should be measured to determine CV risk and determines the aim and target of lipid-lowering treatment (LLT). Lipid-lowering treatment improves cardiovascular prognosis and prolongs life in both primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention. Despite the availability of effective lipid-lowering drug...

Recommendations of the Experts of the Polish Cardiac Society (PCS) and the Polish Lipid Association (PoLA) on the diagnosis and management of elevated lipoprotein(a) levels
Arch Med Sci. 2024 Jan 31;20(1):8-27. doi: 10.5114/aoms/183522. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTLipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is made up of a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle and a specific apolipoprotein(a). The blood concentration of Lp(a) is approximately 90% genetically determined, and the main genetic factor determining Lp(a) levels is the size of the apo(a) isoform, which is determined by the number of KIV2 domain repeats. The size of the apo(a) isoform is inversely proportional to the blood concentration of Lp(a). Lp(a) is a strong and independent cardiovascular risk factor. Elevated Lp(a) levels ≥ 50 mg/dl (≥ 125 nmol/...
