Unraveling the protective role of Nrf2 in molluscs: Insights into mitochondrial and apoptosis pathways in the defense against Bap-induced oxidative stress
Aquat Toxicol. 2023 Oct 11;264:106728. doi: 10.1016/j.aquatox.2023.106728. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBenzopyrene (Bap) is a major constituent of petroleum pollutants commonly found in aquatic environments, and its mutagenic and carcinogenic properties have adverse effects on aquatic organisms' development, growth, and reproduction. The antioxidant defense system element, NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), has been linked to the oxidative stress response in marine invertebrates exposed to toxic substances. In a previous study, a novel Nrf2 homologue, McNrf2, was identified in mussel Mytilus coruscus, a significant model mar...

The heat shock protein 20 gene family in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea): Identification, phylogenetic relationships, expression analyses
Aquat Toxicol. 2023 Sep 19;264:106700. doi: 10.1016/j.aquatox.2023.106700. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLarge yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) is an economically important fish in China, but its aquaculture industry has been threatened by both biotic and abiotic stressors such as hypoxia and pathogens. In the current study, hsp20 genes were identified and analyzed systematically for the first time from the genome of large yellow croaker, and their roles in hypoxia response and Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas plecoglossicida infection were investigated. Herein, 11 hsp20 genes were identified and annotated, phylogenet...

Impacts of isolated or mixed Roundup ® Original DI and Boral® 500 SC herbicides on the survival and metamorphosis of Melanophryniscus admirabilis tadpoles
Aquat Toxicol. 2023 Oct 6;264:106715. doi: 10.1016/j.aquatox.2023.106715. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe bufonid species Melanophryniscus admirabilis is restricted to a single location in the southern Atlantic Forest, Brazil. Although the site of occurrence of M. admirabilis is covered with native forest and it is not directly exposed to pesticides application, the area is surrounded by agricultural activity. Our objectives were to evaluate possible alterations in morphological parameters (body mass, snout-vent length, and body index), metamorphosis (time to reach Gosner stages 42, 46 and to complete metamorphosis), and...

Toxic effects of combined exposure to cadmium and nitrate on intestinal morphology, immune response, and microbiota in juvenile Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)
In this study, juvenile Japanese flounders (P. olivaceus) were immersed in seawater samples with different combinations of Cd2+ (0, 0.2, and 2 mg/L) and NO3- (0 and 80 mg/L NO3N) for 30 days to explore their toxic impacts on intestinal morphology, tight junction (TJ) barrier, immune response, and microbiota. Our results showed that Cd2+ or NO3- exposure alone led to histopathological damage of the gut, while their co-exposure aggravated intestinal damage. Moreover, co-exposure substantially decreased TJ-related gene expression, including occludin, claudin-10, and ZO-2, suggesting increased TJ permeability in the gut. Regar...
