Zoledronic Acid Accelerates ER Stress-Mediated Inflammation by Increasing PDE4B Expression in Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw
Appl Biochem Biotechnol. 2024 Mar 25. doi: 10.1007/s12010-024-04859-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLong-term administration of bisphosphonates can lead to a significant side effect known as bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). Although macrophage-mediated inflammation has been established as an important factor in BRONJ, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In the current study, the roles of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in zoledronic acid (ZOL)-induced inflammation were analyzed in macrophages, and the regulatory mechanism of ER stress activation was next investigated. An in vitro model of B...

Mechanism of Cell-Killing Activity of Plantaricin LD1 Against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922
In this study, we have performed a detailed mechanism of action of plantaricin LD1 against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 considering Micrococcus luteus MTCC 106 as control. The plantaricin LD1 showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 34.57 µg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 138.3 µg/mL against M. luteus MTCC 106, whereas MIC 69.15 µg/mL and MBC 276.6 µg/mL were found against E. coli ATCC 25922. The efflux of potassium ions, dissipation of membrane potential (∆ψ), and transmembrane pH gradient (∆pH) of plantaricin LD1-treated cells suggested the membrane-acting nature of plantaricin LD1...

Optimization of Spore Production in Bacillus coagulans Using Response Surface Methodology Approach
This study investigated the spore densities and formation efficiency of B. coagulans. The optimal medium formulation consisted of yeast extract (1.00 g L-1), potassium acetate (20.00 g L-1), and MnSO4 (0.01 g L-1 and 0.03 g L-1). After reaching the optimal medium, a response surface regression equation was established based on the results of central composite design (CCD) experimental designs to optimize time, temperature, and pH parameters. The predicted results thus obtained were in good agreement (R2 = 95.19%) with the results obtained by performing experiments. Multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANO...

Chromatographic Fingerprinting of Cacao Pod Husk Extracts (Theobroma cacao L.): Exploring Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Antidiabetic Properties with In Silico Molecular Docking Analysis
Appl Biochem Biotechnol. 2024 Mar 25. doi: 10.1007/s12010-024-04912-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNatural drugs derived from plants are becoming more popular because of their apparent biological efficacy, affordability, and safety. A byproduct of cocoa farms, cocoa pod husk (CPH), is often disregarded yet contains an abundance of phenolic chemicals that have antimicrobial and antioxidant features, which has led to intensive investigation into possible biomedical applications. In order to identify crucial functional groups and phytochemical components, we carefully examined the 80% ethanol and dichloromethane extracts of...

Exploring the Phytochemical Diversity and Antioxidant Potential of the Vietnamese Smilax glabra Roxb: Insights from UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS and Zebrafish Model Studies
This study revealed a wide range of phytochemical compounds, including flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides, alkaloids, organic acids, phenolics, and steroids. Furthermore, utilizing zebrafish as a model organism, we discovered that these extracts have the surprising ability to greatly improve the survival rate of zebrafish larvae exposed to oxidative stress caused by arsenite (NaAsO2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Notably, our discoveries suggest the occurrence of new antioxidative pathways in addition to the kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway, expanding th...
