Functional mannose binding lectin levels in patients with pediatric onset systemic lupus erythematosus in remission
ConclusionLarge variation exists in fMBL levels in patients with SLE even when in remission. Very low fMBL levels were found in some children with younger age of onset of SLE, multisystem involvement and severe course of the disease. Positive correlation of MBL levels with anti‐ds DNA titers suggest that its values vary with activity and could be a potential biomarker of the disease. (Source: APLAR Journal of Rheumatology)

Medium ‐ and long‐chain acylcarnitines are associated with osteoarthritis severity and arterial stiffness in end‐stage osteoarthritis patients: a case‐control study
ConclusionWe found decreased levels of acylcarnitines in OA patients. Furthermore, medium‐and long‐chain acylcarnitines associated independently with arterial stiffness and were related to radiographic severity of OA. Thus, acylcarnities might play an important role in the association between OA and CVD. (Source: APLAR Journal of Rheumatology)

Analysis of anti ‐melanoma differentiation‐associated gene 5 antibody in Hong Kong Chinese patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies: diagnostic utility and clinical correlations
ConclusionAnti‐MDA5 Ab is found exclusively in DM patients of the CADM subtype and is associated with RP‐ILD and digital ulcers, suggesting that examination of this antibody is clinically useful in Hong Kong Chinese patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. However, further studies are required to assess its prognostic significance, and to explore the difference of its presentations in various populations. (Source: APLAR Journal of Rheumatology)

Methotrexate might reduce ischemic stroke in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a population ‐based retrospective cohort study
ConclusionsAt a dosage of > 0.5 defined daily dose, short‐term methotrexate might decrease ischemic stroke risk in RA patients, while hydroxychloroquine and sulfasalazine were neutral. (Source: APLAR Journal of Rheumatology)

Management of gout and hyperuricemia: Multidisciplinary consensus in Taiwan
Abstract Gout is an inflammatory disease manifested by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints, cartilage, synovial bursa, tendons or soft tissues. Gout is not a new disease, which was first documented nearly 5,000 years ago. The prevalence of gout has increased globally in recent years, imposing great disease burden worldwide. Moreover, gout or hyperuricemia is clearly associated with a variety of comorbidities, including cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, urolithiasis, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction, and psoriasis. To prevent acute arthritis attacks and compli...

Efficacy of anakinra in a patient with systemic amyloidosis presenting as amyloidoma
We report a case of a soft tissue amyloidoma in the abdomen of a 16‐year‐old girl who was diagnosed as having systemic amyloidosis. A girl aged 16 years was referred to our hospital with a pre‐diagnosis of a retroperitoneal mass documented with abdominal ultrasonography and tomography. A laboratory examination revealed nephrotic syndrome. She underwent surgery for a complete resection of the lesion. A histopathologic examination with Congo red and crystal violet dyes verified the diagnosis of amyloidoma. An immunohistochemical study for amyloid A protein was positive. A renal biopsy was also compatible with AA amyloi...
