Organizing pneumonia in a carrier of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1
We present a case of an 82-year-old woman with OP as a HABA. This patient responded to corticosteroid therapy; however, the patient required the continuation of oral corticosteroid therapy to avoid OP relapse. In cases of OP as a HABA that are not stabilized by treatment with corticosteroids, continuation of oral corticosteroid therapy might be considered. (Source: Annals of Thoracic Medicine)

Growing teratoma syndrome of mediastinal nonseminomatous germ cell tumor
Nguk Chai Diong, Benedict Dharmaraj, Cindy Thomas Joseph, Narasimman SathiamurthyAnnals of Thoracic Medicine 2020 15(1):38-40Mediastinal nonseminomatous germ cell tumor (NSGCT) is rare. NSGCT shows excellent response to cisplatin-based chemotherapy. However, some tumors continue to enlarge despite normal tumor markers after chemotherapy, a rare condition called growing teratoma syndrome (GTS). Recognition of this condition is imperative for prompt surgical resection to prevent further cardiopulmonary compression and to improve survival. Multidisciplinary team meeting is important for perioperative preparation and care to i...

Incidence of latent tuberculosis infection among health science students during clinical training
CONCLUSIONs: The risk of acquiring LTBI during clinical training in health science colleges is 10%. Students in the college of medicine are at significantly higher risk of LTBI than students of other health science specialties. (Source: Annals of Thoracic Medicine)

The effect of the presence and severity of bronchiectasis on the respiratory functions, exercise capacity, dyspnea perception, and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with Stage 3 and 4 COPD, the presence of bronchiectasis adversely affects the clinical status of the patients, decreases their exercise capacity, deteriorates their quality of life, and disrupts their psychological status. Investigating the presence of bronchiectasis in COPD patients is crucial for early diagnosis and proper treatment. (Source: Annals of Thoracic Medicine)

Congenital lobar emphysema: Thoracotomy versus minimally invasive surgery
CONCLUSIONS: CLE is a rare malformation with variable presentation. Infants presenting with respiratory distress or recurrent chest infection should be evaluated for the possibility of CLE. Lobectomy is the treatment of choice, and rarely, the patients may be managed conservatively. Thoracoscopic lobectomy is a safe procedure with the possibility of air leak and conversion to open lobectomy. (Source: Annals of Thoracic Medicine)

Ventilator- and interface-related factors influencing patient-ventilator asynchrony during noninvasive ventilation
Hadil A Al Otair, Ahmed S BaHammamAnnals of Thoracic Medicine 2020 15(1):1-8 Patient-ventilator asynchrony (PVA) is common in patients receiving noninvasive ventilation (NIV). This occurs primarily when the triggering and cycling-off of ventilatory assistance are not synchronized with the patient's inspiratory efforts and could result in increased work of breathing and niv failure. In general, five types of asynchrony can occur during NIV: ineffective inspiratory efforts, double-triggering, auto-triggering, short-ventilatory cycling, and long-ventilatory cycling. Many factors that affect PVA are mostly related ...

Prevalence and factors associated with adult bronchial asthma in Aseer region, Southwestern Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of BA was high, affecting one-fifth of adults in Aseer region. The study revealed some modifiable factors significantly associated with BA in adults. There is a need to improve asthma control programs at the primary health-care level, particularly at rural and at low-altitude areas, and more focus should address the elders. In addition, enhancing community-based health promotion programs tackling the identified modifiable factors of BA are required. (Source: Annals of Thoracic Medicine)

Pulmonary dysfunction among adolescents and adults with sickle cell disease in Nigeria: Implications for monitoring
CONCLUSION: There is a high burden of pulmonary dysfunction in SCD among Nigerians which may be related to the severity of disease. There is a need for further research to explore the effectiveness of potential interventions so as to harness the benefits from monitoring and early detection. (Source: Annals of Thoracic Medicine)

Diagnosis of infectious pleural effusion using predictive models based on pleural fluid biomarkers
CONCLUSIONS: The two predictive models developed for IPE showed a good diagnostic performance, superior to that of any of the markers when used separately. Although IL-6 contributes a slight greater capacity of discrimination to the model that includes it, its routine determination does not seem justified. (Source: Annals of Thoracic Medicine)
