Trends in Surgical Patents Held by Surgeons From 1993 to 2018
Conclusions: 3.3% of patents related to surgery involve a surgeon inventor, and although the number of surgical patents has shown an exponential increase, surgeon involvement in these inventions has grown minimally. Surgical innovation training may offer an opportunity to reduce these discrepancies and increase surgeon involvement as patent holders. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

Sex Representation Among Principal Investigators in Cardiac Surgery Clinical Trials in the United States: The Glass Ceiling and Room for Improvement
Conclusions: Equitable opportunities for PI positions are available for junior-level but not senior-level cardiothoracic surgeons. These results suggest a need for active engagement and promotion of equal opportunities in cardiac surgery. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

Reviewing the Reviewers Potential Financial Conflicts of Interest in Editorial Boards of Surgery Journals
Conclusions: Industry funding to editorial board members of high impact surgery journals is prevalent and underreported. Mechanisms of disclosure for COI are needed at the editorial board level to provide readers full transparency. This would acknowledge this COI of editorial board members, and thereby attempt to potentially further reduce the risk of bias in editorial decisions. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

A Competency-based Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Curriculum Significantly Improves General Surgery Residents’ Operative Performance and Decreases Skill Variability: Cohort Study
Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a CBE curriculum within a general surgery residency program and to evaluate its effectiveness in improving resident skill. Summary of Background Data: Operative skill variability affects residents and practicing surgeons and directly impacts patient outcomes. CBE can decrease this variability by ensuring uniform skill acquisition. We implemented a CBE LC curriculum to improve resident performance and decrease skill variability. Methods: PGY-2 residents completed the curriculum during monthly rotations starting in July 2017. Once simulator proficien...

The Association of Postoperative Opioid Prescriptions with Patient Outcomes
Conclusions: Patients who were not prescribed opioids after surgery had similar clinical and patient-reported outcomes as patients who were prescribed opioids. This suggests that minimizing opioids as part of routine postoperative care is unlikely to adversely affect patients. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

Association of Opioid Type With Opioid Consumption After Surgery
Conclusions: Although patients prescribed hydrocodone consumed more tablets than patients prescribed oxycodone, this difference was not clinically significant and did not result in differences in satisfaction, pain, or refills. Perioperative opioid prescribing guidelines may recommend the same number of 5 mg oxycodone and hydrocodone tablets without sacrificing patient-reported outcomes. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

Association of Postoperative Opioid Prescription Size and Patient Satisfaction
Conclusions: In a large cohort of patients undergoing common surgical procedures, there was no association between opioid prescription size at discharge after surgery and patient satisfaction. This implies that surgeons can provide significantly smaller opioid prescriptions after surgery without negatively affecting patient satisfaction. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

Patient Perceptions of Audio and Video Recording in the Operating Room
Conclusions: Patients have a diverse set of views about the potential benefits, risks, and uses for OR data and consider themselves to be important stakeholders. Our study identifies pathways and potential challenges to implementation of continuous audio/video recording in ORs. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

What are the Top Research Priorities in Surgical Simulation and How Can They Be Best Addressed? Results From a Multidisciplinary Consensus Conference
Conclusions: The top 3 priorities in surgical simulation research were defined and project outlines were developed for impactful projects on these topics. Successful completion of such projects is expected to advance the field of simulation-based surgical education. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

Comparison of Patient Outcomes Among Integrated Residency Versus Fellowship-trained Vascular Surgeons
Conclusions: Despite fewer total years of training, graduates of IVSR programs achieve equivalent surgical outcomes as fellowship-trained vascular surgeons once in practice. These results suggest that concerns about differential competence among integrated residency graduates are not warranted. (Source: Annals of Surgery)

Prospective Assessment of a Protocol Using Neuromonitoring, Early Limb Reperfusion, and Selective Temporary Aneurysm Sac Perfusion to Prevent Spinal Cord Injury During Fenestrated-branched Endovascular Aortic Repair
Conclusion: This prospective nonrandomized study using a standardized strategy to prevent SCI was associated with low incidence of the SCI during F-BEVAR. Permanent paraplegia occurred in 1%. (Source: Annals of Surgery)
