Celiac Disease in Children and Adolescents at a Singe Center in Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: CD may present with classical symptoms or be identified through screening programs. Growth and laboratory abnormalities usually improve after introduction of a GFD. Adherence to a GFD remains a problem; therefore, thorough assessment and counseling at the time of diagnosis and ongoing care are crucial. Ann Saudi Med 2011 ; 31(1): 51-57PMID: 21245600 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.75779 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Detection of Nudeophosminand FMS-LikeTyrosine Kinase-3 Gene Mutations in Acute Myeloid Leukemia
CONCLUSION:Our data showed a high frequency of NPM1 mutations in the monocytic subtypes of AML, as well as a high degree of association between the occurrence of NPM1 and FLT3/ITD mutations. Ann Saudi Med 2011 ; 31(1): 45-50PMID: 21245599 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.75778 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

A Reappraisal of Saphenous Vein Grafting
Autologous saphenous vein grafting has been broadly used as a bypass conduit, interposition graft, and patch graft in a variety of operations in cardiac, thoracic, neurovascular, general vascular, vascular access, and urology surgeries, since they are superior to prosthetic veins. Modified saphenous vein grafts (SVG), including spiral and cylindrical grafts, and vein cuffs or patches, are employed in vascular revascularization to satisfy the large size of the receipt vessels or to obtain a better patency. A loop SVG helps flap survival in a muscle flap transfer in plastic and reconstructive surgery. For dialysis or transfu...

How Do Medical Students in Their Clinical Years Perceive Basic Sciences Courses at King Saud University?
CONCLUSION: Current attitudes of medical students towards their basic science courses indicate a need to reform the curricula so as to maximize the benefit of these courses. Ann Saudi Med 2011; 31(1): 58-61PMID: 21245601 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.75780 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Prevalence of the Pro12Ala Missense Mutation in the PPARG2 Gene in Kuwaiti Patients with Primary Knee Osteoarthritis
CONCLUSIONS: This study found no significant association between thePPARG2 gene Pro12Ala missense mutation and knee OA. However, the presence of the Pro-Pro genotype of thePPARG2 gene mutation has a protective effect against development of OA. Ann Saudi Med 2011; 31(1): 35-39PMID: 21245597 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.75776 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Poland-Mobius Syndrome in an Infant Girl
We describe a case of Poland-Mobius syndrome in association with congenital bilateral vocal fold immobility. To our knowldge, this is the first report of such an association between Poland-Mobius syndrome and congenital bilateral vocal fold immobility. Ann Saudi Med 2009;29(6): 482-484PMID: 19847089 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.57174 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

OX40/OX40L in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Association with Disease Activity and Lupus Nephritis
CONCLUSION: OX40-OX40L interaction plays a role in the pathogenesis of SLE. The expression of OX40 on CD4+ T-lymphocytes and the serum level of OX40L may act as markers of lupus nephritis. Measurements of percentages of CD4+ T-lymphocytes expressing OX40 may serve as an indicator of disease activity in SLE. Ann Saudi Med 2011 ; 31(1): 29-34PMID: 21245596 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.75775 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Outcome of a Newborn Hearing Screening Program in a Tertiary Hospital in Malaysia: The First Five Years
CONCLUSION: A newborn hearing screening program is an important tool for early diagnosis and treatment. Even though the prevalence of hearing impairment may be low, the problem needs to be addressed early as the development of infants requires normal hearing. Ann Saudi Med 2011 ; 31 (1 ): 24-28PMID: 21245595 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.75774 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in a Saudi Community
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of diabetes is high among the Saudi population and represents a major clinical and public health problem. A national prevention program to prevent diabetes and address the modifiable risk factors at the community level, targeting high-risk groups, should be implemented soon. Ann Saudi Med 2011; 31(1): 19-23PMID: 21245594 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.75773 (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Diffuse Idiopathic Hyperplasia of the Sternocleidomastoid Muscle in a Child
We describe a case of idiopathic diffuse enlargement of unilateral SCM in a 12-year-old child without any functional compromise or torticollis. The histopathological and clinical characteristics differentiating it from more commonly described sternocleidomastoid tumor or fibromatosis coli are described. We believe this is the first case report of idiopathic hyperplasia of SCM. Ann Saudi Med 2009;29(6): 471-473PMID: 19847086 DOI: 10.4103/0256-4947.57171  (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)
