Evaluation of Variability in Operative Efficiency in Plastic Surgery Procedures
Conclusions The largest component with greatest variability was preparation for surgery in the OR. Improved efficiency by decreasing variability increases the value of healthcare delivered to patients and OR throughput. (Source: Annals of Plastic Surgery)

Opioid Prescribing Practices Among Plastic Surgeons: Results of the 2019 American Society of Plastic Surgeons Opioid Survey
Conclusions Based on survey responses, potential areas of improvement to reduce opioid prescribing and use include provider education on the use of multimodal pain regimens including nonopioid medication and “as needed” rather than scheduled dosing, use of local anesthetic blocks, as well as patient education on opioid safety and proper disposal of unused medication. Medial Plantar Fasciocutaneous Flap Reconstruction for Load-Bearing Foot Defects in Patients With Acral Melanoma
This study examined the efficacy and safety of a medial plantar artery perforator flap (MPAPF) for plantar defect reconstruction after wide excision of an ALM. Method Twenty-five patients who underwent reconstruction with a MPAPF between 2011 and 2021 were enrolled in this study. The defects were classified into 6 plantar zones. Demographic and clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. Results Reconstruction with medial plantar fasciocutaneous island flaps was performed in all cases, except for 4 patients who had lesions in forefoot, which required free medial plantar flaps. Defects in lateral and posterio...

Versatility of Medial Sural Artery Islanded Pedicled Perforator Flap for Resurfacing Areas Around the Knee
Soft tissue defects with exposed tendon, bones, and joints around the knee are difficult and challenging to treat because of its location over a joint, requires a stable cover that is supple and stretchable. For any knee defects, the gastrocnemius muscle flap is the first choice for the reconstruction, although it causes less functional deficit; however, because of its less reach, it is difficult to cover the defect in the superolateral aspect of knee joint and anterior to the tibial tuberosity with the other disadvantage being the bulkiness. The medial sural artery perforator flap (MSAPF) provides thin fasciocutaneous tis...

Anatomic Comparison of Recipient Nerves for Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap Neurotization: A Randomized Control Trial
Conclusions This study provides anatomic and histological evidence that the fourth LCB and third ACB contain comparable mean numbers of sensory axons. Both constitute adequate recipient nerves for coaptation in deep inferior epigastric perforator reinnervation to achieve optimal sensory return after breast reconstruction. The fourth LCB should be preferable when the third ACB remains intact to preserve any native breast flap sensation. (Source: Annals of Plastic Surgery)

Management of Macrocystic Lymphatic Malformation in the Cervicofacial Region: Ultrasound-Guided Iodine Tincture Cauterization Combined With Intralesional Negative Pressure
Conclusions Because of satisfactory outcomes and low treatment frequency, ultrasound-guided iodine tincture cauterization combined with intralesional negative pressure represents an efficacious, safe, and feasible method for the management of macro-cLM in the cervicofacial region. One-Stage Reconstruction of Large Upper Vermillion Defects Using a Lower to Upper Bipedicle Axial Cross-Lip Vermillion Flap
Conclusions Our experience has proven that a lower to upper axial cross-lip musculomucosal flap with bipedicle lower labial coronary arteries is a safe and effective approach for correcting large upper vermillion defects. It is a 1-stage operation for the overall length of upper vermillion reconstruction. This method could improve upper-lip aesthetics and achieve reconstructive goals while avoiding lower-lip deformities. (Source: Annals of Plastic Surgery)

Reading Man Flap: A Nasal Reconstruction Technique
Conclusions Using the advantage of extra tissue relaxation provided by an unequal Z-plasty, the reading man procedure seems to be a useful alternative for the closure of nasal defects with alike local skin. As a critical achievement, this procedure does not require excision of additional healthy tissue. Borrowing tissue from multiple directions, it avoids dog ear formation and distortion of the mobile anatomic structures. (Source: Annals of Plastic Surgery)

Is Routine Imaging Necessary for the Management of Pediatric Hand Fractures Postoperatively?
Conclusions This study shows that clinically significant fracture displacement is rare after operative reduction and fixation in pediatric age group. It demonstrates our experience in refraining from routine postoperative radiographs. The overall benefit is to avoid unnecessary radiation and subsequent costs implicated. The Role of Maximal Locoregional Block in Autologous Breast Reconstruction
Background Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) has become the standard of care in microsurgical breast reconstruction. The current literature provides overwhelming evidence of the benefit of ERAS pathways in improving quality of recovery, decreasing length of hospital stay, and minimizing the amount of postoperative narcotic use in these patients. However, there are limited data on the role of using maximal locoregional anesthetic blocks targeting both the abdomen and chest as an integral part of an ERAS protocol in abdominally based autologous breast reconstruction. The aim of this study is to compare the outcomes ...

Simultaneous Double Eyelid Blepharoplasty and Blepharoptosis Correction With Levator Aponeurosis Plication Technique: Clinical Experience of 108 Cases
Conclusions This modified levator aponeurosis plication introduced in this study is a simple and effective method for creating double-eyelid crease and correcting mild blepharoptosis simultaneously, and provides a satisfactory outcome. As such, we recommend this method in treating patients with both single eyelid and mild blepharoptosis. (Source: Annals of Plastic Surgery)

The Effects of Website and Social Media Presence of Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Programs on Prospective Applicants: An Analysis During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic
Conclusions During the 2020 to 2021 plastic surgery application cycle, applicants used social media accounts of plastic surgery residency programs to inform and educate themselves about prospective programs. This study suggests that investing resources into a social media residency accounts is a meaningful pursuit for integrated plastic surgery programs and is an important aspect in today's recruitment.
