Estimating the mortality risk correcting for high loss to follow-up among female sex workers with HIV in Durban, South Africa, 2018-2021
CONCLUSIONS: LTFU is common among FSW with HIV in South Africa with additional investigation of vital status demonstrating under-ascertained mortality. These data suggest the need for comprehensively addressing risks for mortality among FSW.PMID:38382770 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2024.02.006 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)

The impact of COVID-19 vaccination prior to SARS-CoV-2 infection on prevalence of long COVID among a population-based probability sample of Michiganders, 2020-2022
CONCLUSIONS: Long COVID prevalence was 40-60% lower among adults vaccinated (vs. unvaccinated) prior to their COVID-19 onset. COVID-19 vaccination may be an important tool to reduce the burden of long COVID.PMID:38382771 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2024.02.007 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)

Secondhand smoke exposure can increase the risk of first ischemic stroke: a 10.7-year prospective cohort study in China
CONCLUSIONS: Daily SHS exposure was associated with higher risks of ischemic stroke. Proactive tobacco control strategies are necessary to decrease the risk of ischemic stroke in never smokers.PMID:38367798 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2024.02.005 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)

Association of COVID-19 pandemic societal closures with gestational weight gain among women in South Carolina, 2018-2021
CONCLUSIONS: We found limited changes in GWG patterns for a subset of pregnant women during and after pandemic closures, compared with prepandemic period in South Carolina, countering findings of weight changes among the general population.PMID:38331235 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2024.02.002 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)

Trends and disparities in deaths among young persons in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, injury-related causes accounted for the majority of the increases in deaths in children and young adults, driven mainly by firearms, drug overdoses, and motor vehicle traffic crashes. Findings highlight the importance of understanding the drivers of these marked increases in injury-related mortality and the need for injury prevention efforts among children even in the context of an infectious disease pandemic.PMID:38309641 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2024.01.009 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)
