Relationships between early-life family poverty and relative socioeconomic status with gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy later in life
CONCLUSIONS: Early-life poverty and relative SES are associated with GDM; understanding mechanisms underlying these associations may help identify novel intervention targets to reduce socioeconomic disparities in GDM.PMID:37573949 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.08.002 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)

Calculating risk and prevalence ratios and differences in R: Developing intuition with a hands-on tutorial and code
We present a hands-on tutorial that includes annotated code written in an open-source statistical programming language (R) showing readers how to apply, compare, and understand four methods used to estimate a risk or prevalence ratio (or difference), rather than presenting an odds ratio. We will provide guidance on when to use each method, discussing the strengths and limitations of each approach, and compare the results obtained across them. Ultimately, we aim to help trainees, public health researchers, and interdisciplinary professionals develop an intuition for these methods and empower them to implement and interpret ...

Impact of loss to follow-up on survival estimation for cystic fibrosis
Ann Epidemiol. 2023 Aug 5:S1047-2797(23)00151-5. doi: 10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.07.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDeaths among those lost to follow-up (LTFU) in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry (CFFPR) are critically important to the epidemiology of cystic fibrosis (CF). Unreported deaths could impact estimates of survival if LTFU is associated with disease trajectory. We characterized the LTFU population (1986-2017) from the CFFPR and identified deaths via linkage with the National Death Index (NDI). Median predicted survival age was estimated using a Cox proportional hazards model and calculated with an...

Association of protective behaviors with SARS-CoV-2 infection: Results from a longitudinal cohort study of adults in the San Francisco Bay Area
Ann Epidemiol. 2023 Jul 29:S1047-2797(23)00152-7. doi: 10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.07.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn an effort to decrease transmission during the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic, public health officials encouraged masking, social distancing, and working from home, and restricted travel. However, many studies of the effectiveness of these measures had significant methodologic limitations. In this analysis, we used data from the TrackCOVID study, a longitudinal cohort study of a population-based sample of 3,846 adults in the San Francisco Bay Area, to evaluate the association between self-reported p...

Using real-life data to model the impact of increasing BCG vaccination coverage and scar prevalence on all-cause infant mortality
CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed previous observations: having a BCG scar markedly reduces infant MR. Increasing current global 2-month BCG vaccination coverage from 76% to 99%, and scar prevalence among vaccinated infants from 52% to 95% might reduce global infant mortality by >200,000 deaths/year. Thus, optimising BCG vaccination programmes to focus on increasing early BCG vaccination coverage and the overall scar prevalence would have major public health benefits.PMID:37479121 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.07.007 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)

Improving data capture of race and ethnicity for the Food and Drug Administration Sentinel database: a narrative review
CONCLUSION: Limitations on accessible self-reported data for validation will dictate methods to improve race and ethnicity data capture. We recommend methods leveraging multiple sources that account for variations in geography, age, and sex.PMID:37479122 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.07.006 (Source: Annals of Epidemiology)
