A Computational Investigation of the Effects of Temporal Synchronization of Left Ventricular Assist Device Speed Modulation with the Cardiac Cycle on Intraventricular Hemodynamics
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Mar 22. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03489-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with advanced heart failure are implanted with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) as a bridge-to-transplantation or destination therapy. Despite advances in pump design, the risk of stroke remains high. LVAD implantation significantly alters intraventricular hemodynamics, where regions of stagnation or elevated shear stresses promote thrombus formation. Third generation pumps incorporate a pulsatility mode that modulates rotational speed of the pump to enhance in-pump washout. We investigated how the timing of the puls...

Wnt16 Increases Bone-to-Implant Contact in an Osteopenic Rat Model by Increasing Proliferation and Regulating the Differentiation of Bone Marrow Stromal Cells
This study evaluated the role of Wnt16 during surface-mediated osteoblastic differentiation of MSCs in vitro and osseointegration in vivo. MSCs were cultured on Ti substrates with different surface properties and non-canonical Wnt expression was determined. Subsequently, MSCs were cultured on Ti substrates +/-Wnt16 (100 ng/mL) and anti-Wnt16 antibodies (2 μg/mL). Wnt16 expression was increased in cells grown on microrough surfaces that were processed to be hydrophilic and have nanoscale roughness. However, treatment MSCs on these surfaces with exogenous rhWnt16b increased total DNA content and osteoprotegerin production, ...

Effect of Nasal Inhalation on Drug Particle Deposition and Size Distribution in the Upper Airway: With Soft Mist Inhalers
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Mar 20. doi: 10.1007/s10439-023-03423-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDelivery of drugs to the lungs is commonly achieved using nasal and/or oral breathing-assisted techniques. The route of inhalation can substantially change the fate of inhaled droplets. The Respimat® Soft Mist™ Inhaler (SMI) is a commercially available efficient inhaler with 40-60% effectiveness. In the present study, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a custom setup to investigate the effect of a combined oral/nasal inhalation route on the SMI's regional droplet deposition, size distribution, and flow field. Our set...

The Effect of Lens Shape, Zonular Insertion and Finite Element Model on Simulated Shape Change of the Eye Lens
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Mar 19. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03491-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe process of lens shape change in the eye to alter focussing (accommodation) is still not fully understood. Modelling approaches have been used to complement experimental findings in order to determine how constituents in the accommodative process influence the shape change of the lens. An unexplored factor in modelling is the role of the modelling software on the results of simulated shape change. Finite element models were constructed in both Abaqus and Ansys software using biological parameters from measurements of shape and re...

Contribution of Soft Tissue Passive Forces in Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint Distraction
This study aims to present an experimental-numerical biomechanical model of thumb carpometacarpal joint to explore the contribution of tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues in the passive forces during distraction. Five fresh cadaveric specimens were tested using a distractor device to measure the applied forces upon gradual distraction of the intact joint. The subsequent step involved inserting a minuscule sensor into the joint capsule through a small incision, while preserving the integrity of tendons and ligaments, in order to accurately measure the fundamental intra-articular forces. A numerical model was also use...

Comparison of Kinematics for Head Impacts Initiated by Helmets and Shoulder Pads Among High School American Football Athletes
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Mar 20. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03485-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHelmets and shoulder pads are required equipment intended to protect American football athletes by attenuating collision forces during participation. Surprisingly, research differentiating kinematics from head impacts initiated by helmets from those initiated by shoulder pads among adolescent athletes has not been completed. The current study's purpose was to determine the effects of equipment on head impact kinematics. Sixty-nine male American football athletes from three high schools wore helmets equipped with Head Impact Telemetr...

Convection-Enhanced Drug Delivery: Experimental and Analytical Studies of Infusion Behavior in an In Vitro Brain Surrogate
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Mar 19. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03482-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConvection-enhanced drug delivery (CED) directly infuses drugs with a large molecular weight toward target cells as a therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative diseases and brain cancers. Despite the success of many previous in vitro experiments on CED, challenges still remain. In particular, a theoretical predictive model is needed to form a basis for treatment planning, and developing such a model requires well-controlled injection tests that can rigorously capture the convective (advective) and diffusive transport of an infusate...

New Perspectives on Foot Segment Forces and Joint Kinetics-Integrating Plantar Shear Stresses and Pressures with Multi-segment Foot Modeling
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Mar 17. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03484-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe role of the many small foot articulations and plantar tissues in gait is not well understood. While kinematic multi-segment foot models have increased our knowledge of foot segmental motions, the integration of kinetics with these models could further advance our understanding of foot mechanics and energetics. However, capturing and effectively utilizing segmental ground reaction forces remains challenging. The purposes of this study were to (1) develop methodology to integrate plantar pressures and shear stresses with a multi-s...
