Is total thyroidectomy more difficult in Hashimoto's thyroiditis?
CONCLUSION: The mean time for operation and mean time for reaching RLN in patients with HT was significantly longer than in patients with other benign pathology results. It has been scientifically shown that HT should be among the causes of difficult thyroidectomy. This result can provide a legal advantage for surgeons who face such a sad complication.KEY WORDS: Hashimoto thyroiditis, Recurrent laryngeal nerve, Thyroiditis.PMID:38131419 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

Primary Cavernous hemangioma of the Thyroid Gland. A series of 4 cases and review of literature
Ann Ital Chir. 2023;94:557-562.ABSTRACTCavernous hemangiomas can arise nearly anywhere in the body where there are blood vessels. The primary hemangioma of the thyroid gland is extremely rare, and only a few cases have been previously reported. The true incidence of cavernous hemangiomas is difficult to estimate because they are frequently misdiagnosed as other venous malformations. We will present 4 cases from the age of 38 to 72 years old, diagnosed with cavernous hemangiomas. All 4 cases are women and the diagnosis was established after total thyroidectomy by histopathological examination. They clinically present as asy...

Predisposing risk factors for isolated bile leakage after pancreaticoduodenectomy
DISCUSSION: Male sex, preoperatively low levels of serum albumin, and preoperative history of cholangitis can be listed as risk factors for IBL development. Physicians should pay attention to the risk of postoperative IBL development in such patients.KEY WORDS: Isolated bile leakage, Pancreaticoduodenectomy, Morbidity.PMID:38131350 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

The impact of COVID-19 infection on hemodialysis patients vs kidney transplant patients
CONCLUSION: All this literature information and our study suggests that mortality rates were statistically similar or lower for transplant group. So it is unnecessary to delay kidney transplantation in patients with appropriate indications.KEY WORDS: COVID-19, Hemodialysis, Kidney transplantation, Mortality.PMID:38131360 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

Emergency liver resection for non-traumatic lesions. A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Emergency major liver resection for tumoral causes prolongs survival even if the cause is usually malignant. The tumor can be resected with negative resection margins, respecting the correct oncological requirements, both per primam or staged approach according to each case specifically.KEY WORDS: Adenoma, Emergency, Hemorrhage, Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Liver Resection, Liver Tumors.PMID:38131361 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

Distal outpatients hemodynamic treatment of chronic venous insufficiency of the lower limbs: a new proposal
Ann Ital Chir. 2023;94:549-556.ABSTRACTThe etiology of the venous insufficiency of the lower limbs is related to the increase of the district pressure. This occurs in case of pressure overload of the afferent compartment with a progressive increase of the gradient until the reversal of the flow direction. Varicose veins would be the effect and not the cause of the pressure overload which must always be researched in the efferent (draining) compartment. The gradient inversion in a compartment causes a reflux circuit (venous shunt) only if - in addition to the escape point - one re-entry point is also active, The closure of ...

Clinical outcomes of crystallized phenol as a first treatment option in patients with recurrent pilonidal sinus
This study aimed to observe the clinical outcomes of phenol treatment in patients with recurrent pilonidal sinus disease. MATERİAL AND METHODS: This study retrospectively collected data from 107 patients with recurrent the pilonidal disease who received phenol treatment in a single institute. Patients were divided into two groups as successful treatment (ST) and unsuccessful treatment (UST) after phenol application. A comparison was held between groups to define factors associated with failure treatment. RESULTS: There were 89 patients in ST and 18 patients in UST group. The treatment success rate after phenol treatment w...

Reversal of rocuronium induced neuromuscular block with sugammadex in patients under 2 years of age. A series of 280 cases
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sugammadex for reversing deep rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade in children under two years of age.METHODS: Pediatric patients younger than two years of age who underwent neurosurgery under sevoflurane anesthesia were included in the study. Neuromuscular block was achieved by the administration of rocuronium. It was antagonized by the administration of 5 mg/kg sugammadex and evaluated using train-of-four (TOF). Primary outcome measure was the time from sugammadex administration to return of the TOF ratio to 0,9. Postoperative adverse events were also recorded....

Sutures in general surgery. New materials and advice
Ann Ital Chir. 2023;94:649-653.ABSTRACTThe suture thread used in digestive surgery must have several characteristics, including resistance to tension until the anastomosis coalescence, rapid absorption to avoid complications, biocompatibility and ease of handling. The preference is for monofilament polymers as they offer greater guarantees in biliary-digestive anastomoses. Suturing with synthetic polymers and mechanical devices such as staplers are the most suitable techniques. It is believed that staplers may become the gold standard technique in robotic surgery based on their experience and experimental data. In general,...
