Biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of nitrous oxide intoxication: objectives and methodology of the SFBC Working Group
Ann Biol Clin (Paris). 2024 Feb 24;81(6):585-590. doi: 10.1684/abc.2023.1858.ABSTRACTThe recreational use of nitrous oxide (N2O) is an emerging public health issue. Chronic N2O abuse may result in various clinical symptoms, encompassing neurological, psychiatric and cardiovascular outcomes. Despite the difficulties for the laboratory investigation of N2O intoxication, there is currently no guidelines in France to help both clinicians and biologists use appropriate biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with clinical symptoms potentially related to N2O intoxication. A multi-disciplinary Working Group, carri...

Discriminative and prognostic significance of LINC00623 for lung adenocarcinoma
This study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic values of LINC00623 in patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), as well as the promoting role in LUAD progression. LINC00623 levels were identified by RT-qPCR. Using ROC curve analysis, the discrimination value of LINC00623 for LUAD from lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) and the health was assessed. Recurrence-free and overall survival were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate survival analysis. Cell biological properties were analyzed by growth curves, transwell migration, and invasion assays. The downstream miRNA and genes were retr...

The mRNA of solute carrier family 22, member 17 (SLC22A17) plays the potential diagnostic and prognostic role in advantage non-small cell lung cancer patients
This study aims to evaluate the mRNA levels of solute carrier family 22, member 17 (SLC22A17) and its potential clinical value as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in non-small cell lung cancer. This prospective study measured SLC22A17 mRNA levels in lung cancer and paracancer tissues using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The levels of SLC22A17 mRNA in plasma samples from healthy control subjects and patients with lung cancer were also measured. The association between SLC22A17 mRNA levels in plasma and clinicopathological characteristics was determined. Receiver operating characteri...

Therapeutic effects of finasteride: inhibition of disease progression and serum prostate-specific antigen reduction in patients with prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of finasteride on the progression of prostate intraepithelial neoplasia and levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in patients. A total of 120 patients with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia were included in this study from January 2013 to January 2018. All patients underwent prostate biopsies. Among them, 60 patients were assigned to the observation group and received a daily dosage of 5 mg finasteride for 60 months, while the remaining 60 patients were assigned to the control group and did not receive finasteride. PSA levels were measured every six mo...

Integrating pathology and biology into medical education: current state and future directions
Ann Biol Clin (Paris). 2024 Feb 24;81(6):628-639. doi: 10.1684/abc.2023.1857.ABSTRACTPathology and biology are essential in the patient care. However, they suffer from a lack of attractiveness to medicine students. In order to gain insight and improve the visibility and attractiveness of these specialties, we designed a survey and submitted forms to medical students, laboratory medical staff, and clinical staff from the different hospitals and institutes attached to "Université Paris Cité". The responses (363 students (response rate: 9.1%), 109 medical -laboratory staff (25%), 61 clinical staff (10%)) confirmed the poor ...

Management of unexpected laboratory exposure to Burkholderia pseudomallei
We report here a couple of microbiological arguments that can usually guide microbiologists towards presumptive identification of B. pseudomallei. This case report shows the importance of MALDI-TOF MS accurate databases to ensure accurate microbial identification and antibiotic prophylaxis adapted to individuals who were exposed. We also want to underline the importance of developing an effective strategy of prevention against any accidental exposure that can occur in a microbiological laboratory.PMID:38391168 | DOI:10.1684/abc.2023.1854 (Source: Annales de Biologie Clinique)

Not unusual case of male genetic infertility
Ann Biol Clin (Paris). 2024 Feb 24;81(6):657-659. doi: 10.1684/abc.2023.1860.ABSTRACTFollowing a year of regular unprotected intercourse with his partner, and without achieving pregnancy, Mr. L. turned to his general practitioner. A semen analysis was carried out and no spermatozoa was found. After being referred to a male infertility specialist, the patient underwent a second test and a comprehensive assessment of his azoospermia. The azoospermia was confirmed and the genetic investigation revealed aneuploidy..PMID:38391171 | DOI:10.1684/abc.2023.1860 (Source: Annales de Biologie Clinique)

Serological screening for celiac disease, by endomysial antibodies, in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Ann Biol Clin (Paris). 2024 Feb 24;81(6):569-575. doi: 10.1684/abc.2023.1851.ABSTRACTCeliac disease (CD) and rheumathoid arthritis (RA) are both multi-factorial chronic inflammatory auto-immune diseases. In this retrospective study, we determined the frequency of CD in patients with RA using IgA anti-endomysial antibodies (EmA) and tried to explain this association. Indirect immunofluorescence on human umbilical cord was used to detect EmA in 215 patients with seropositive RA collected over a 4-year-period. Two thousand and five hundred healthy blood donors (HBD) served as control group. Among the 215 patients with RA, 12 ...
