Enantioselective Nickel-Catalyzed Denitrogenative Transannulation En Route to N-N Atropisomers
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202400441. doi: 10.1002/anie.202400441. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNickel-catalyzed transannulation reactions triggered by the extrusion of small gaseous molecules have emerged as a powerful strategy for the efficient construction of heterocyclic compounds. However, it's asymmetric synthesis remains challenging because of the difficulty in controlling stereo- and regioselectivity. Herein, we report the first nickel-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis of N-N atropisomers by the denitrogenative transannulation of benzotriazones with internal alkynes. A broad range of N-N atropisomers was obt...

Operando  Spectroscopic Monitoring of Metal Chalcogenides for Overall Water Splitting: New Views of Active Species and Sites
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202400048. doi: 10.1002/anie.202400048. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetal-based chalcogenides exhibit great promise for overall water splitting, yet their intrinsic catalytic reaction mechanisms remain to be fully understood. In this work, we employed operando X-ray absorption (XAS) and in situ Raman spectroscopy to elucidate the structure-activity relationships of low-crystalline cobalt sulfide (L-CoS) catalysts toward overall water splitting. The operando results for L-CoS catalyzing the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) demonstrate that the cobalt centers in the bulk are pr...

Achieving Exceptional Thermal and Hydrolytic Resistance in Chemically Circular Polyesters via In-Chain 1,3-Cyclobutyl Rings
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202401682. doi: 10.1002/anie.202401682. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolyesters, a highly promising class of circular polymers for achieving a closed-loop sustainable plastic economy, inherently exhibit material stability defects, especially in thermal and hydrolytic instability. Here, we introduce a class of polyesters, P(4R-BL) (R = Ph, Bu), featuring conformationally rigid 1,3-cyclobutyl rings in the backbone. These polyesters not only exhibit superior thermostability (Td,5% = 376-380 °C) but also demonstrate exceptional hydrolytic resistance with good integrity even after 1 year in...

Anion-Responsive Colorimetric and Fluorometric Red-Shift in Triarylborane Derivatives: Dual Role of Phenazaborine as Lewis Acid and Electron Donor
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202405158. doi: 10.1002/anie.202405158. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhotophysical modulation of triarylboranes (TABs) through Lewis acid-base interactions is a fundamental approach in sensing anions. Yet, design principles for anion-responsive TABs displaying significant red-shift in absorption and photoluminescence (PL) have remained elusive. Herein, a new strategy for modulating photophysical properties of TABs in red-shift mode has been presented, endowing a nitrogen-bridged triarylborane (1,4-phenazaborine: PAzB) with a contradictory dual role as a Lewis acid and an electron donor....

Selective defluorination of trifluoromethyl substituents by conformationally induced remote substitution
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202403477. doi: 10.1002/anie.202403477. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe selective reduction of an aromatic trifluoromethyl substituent to a difluoromethyl substituent may be achieved by base-promoted elimination to form a difluoro-p-quinomethide which is trapped by an intramolecular nucleophile. High yields are obtained when the nucleophilic trap entails the conformationally favoured cyclisation of an aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) derivative. The resulting cyclised difluoromethyl-substituted arylimidazolidinone products are readily converted to versatile difluoromethyl-substituted aldehyd...

Stereoselective Synthesis of Polysubstituted Conjugated Dienes Enabled by Photo-driven Sequential Sigmatropic Rearrangement
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202400805. doi: 10.1002/anie.202400805. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe here report a highly stereoselective method for the synthesis of polysubstituted conjugated dienes from α-aryl α-diazo alkynyl ketones and pyrazole-substituted unsymmetric aminals under mild conditions, which was driven by photo and involved 1,6-dipolar ion intermediate and quadruple sigmatropic rearrangements, was successfully developed. In this transformation, the cleavage of four bonds and the recombination of five bonds were achieved in one operational step. This protocol also provided a modular tool for const...

Recycling Valuable Alkylbenzenes from Polystyrene through Methanol-Assisted Depolymerization
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202404952. doi: 10.1002/anie.202404952. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe vast bulk of polystyrene (PS), a major type of plastic polymers, ends up in landfills, which takes up to thousands of years to decompose in nature. Chemical recycling promises to enable lower-energy pathways and minimal environmental impacts compared with traditional incineration and mechanical recycling. Herein, we demonstrated that methanol as a hydrogen supplier assisted the depolymerization of PS (denoted as PS-MAD) into alkylbenzenes over a heterogeneous catalyst composed of Ru nanoparticles on SiO2. PS-MAD ac...

Preserving Mesoporosity in Type III Porous Liquids through Dual-layer Surface Weaving
We present a dual-layer surface weaving strategy that can disregard this limitation and achieve micro- and mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF)-based T3PLs even with apertures much larger than the solvent molecules. By first weaving a tight network of poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) on the MOF surface, the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) solvent can be effectively excluded from the pores while smaller guest molecules such as CO2, C2H4, and H2O can freely access the interior, as confirmed by low-pressure adsorption isotherms. Further application of a PDMS-containing polymer coating helps lower the viscosity of the PL due to...

Self-Powered and Self-Recoverable Multimodal Force Sensors Based on Trap State and Interfacial Electron Transfer
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Apr 8:e202404060. doi: 10.1002/anie.202404060. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMulti-dimensional force sensing that combines intensity, location, area and the like could gather a wealth of information from mechanical stimuli. Developing materials with force-induced optical and electrical dual responses would provide unique opportunities to multi-dimensional force sensing, with electrical signals quantifying the force amplitude and the luminescence output providing spatial distribution of force. However, the reliance on external power supply and high-energy excitation source brings significant cha...
