Use of Health Belief Model-based Deep Learning to Understand Public Health Beliefs in Breast Cancer Screening from Social Media before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:280-288. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTBreast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. While breast cancer screening participation is the most effective method for early detection, screening rate has remained low. Given that understanding health perception is critical to understand health decisions, our study utilized the Health Belief Model-based deep learning method to predict and examine public health beliefs in breast cancer and its screening behavior. The results showed that the trends in public health perception are sensitive to political (i.e...

Identification of Outcome-Oriented Progression Subtypes from Mild Cognitive Impairment to Alzheimer's Disease Using Electronic Health Records
In this study, we proposed an outcome-oriented model to identify progression pathways from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD using electronic health records (EHRs) from the OneFlorida+ Clinical Research Consortium. To achieve this, we employed the long short-term memory (LSTM) network to extract relevant information from the sequential records of each patient. The hierarchical agglomerative clustering was then applied to the learned representation to group patients based on their progression subtypes. Our approach identified multiple progression pathways, each of which represented distinct patterns of disease progressi...

Characterizing Autism Spectrum Disorder and Predicting Suicide Risk for Pediatric Psychiatric Emergency Services Encounters
This study sought to characterize and classify youth presenting to the psychiatric emergency department (ED) for a chief complaint of STB. The results of this study validated that a high number of patients with ASD present to the ED with STB. There were important differences in clinical characteristics to those with ASD versus those without. Clinical features that showed important impact in predicting high suicide risk in the ASD cases include elements of the mental status exam such as affect, trauma symptoms, abuse history, and auditory hallucinations. Focused attention is needed on these unique differences in ASD cases s...

Prediction of Transfusion among In-patient Population using Temporal Pattern based Clinical Similarity Graphs
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:679-688. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIntelligent prediction of risk of blood transfusion among hospitalized patients can identify at-risk patients and provide timely information to the hospital to plan and reserve resources to meet the demand of blood transfusion. While previously proposed solutions focus on sub-populations such as patients admitted to ICU after gastrointestinal bleeding or postpartum patients with hemorrhage, we design a predictive model applicable to complete in-patient population. Our model relies on patients' similarity graph based on temporal patterns among clinical ...

Information Seeking and Sensemaking in Emergency Medical Service through Simulation Video Review
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:804-813. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTEmergency medical services (EMS) providers often face significant challenges in their work, including collecting, integrating, and making sense of a variety of information. Despite their criticality, EMS work is one of the very few medical domains with limited technical support. To design and implement effective decision support, it is essential to examine and gain a holistic understanding of the fine-grained process of sensemaking in the field. To that end, we reviewed 25 video recordings of EMS simulations to understand the nuances of EMS sensemaking...

Leveraging A Clinical Dashboard and Process Mappings to Improve Treatment Access and Outcomes for Women Veterans with Urinary Incontinence
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:359-368. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIn support of the Improving Primary Care Understanding of Resources and Screening for Urinary Incontinence to Enhance Treatment initiative with the Veterans Health Administration, we developed a clinical dashboard to support primary care providers in identifying underdiagnosed, undertreated women Veterans with urinary incontinence. This paper describes our dashboard development and evaluation. We employed a user-centered design in determining dashboard requirements, interface design, and functionality. We invited early users at three pilot sites to for...

Creating Augmented Reality Holograms for Polytrauma Patients Using 3D Slicer and Holomedicine Medical Image Platform
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:663-668. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIn traumatology physicians heavily rely on computed tomography (CT) 2D axial scans to identify and assess the patient's injuries after an accident. However, in some cases it can be difficult to rigorously evaluate the real extent of the damage considering only the bidimensional slices produced by the CT, and some life-threatening lesions can be missed. With the development of 3D holographic rendering and extended reality (XR) technology, CT images can be projected in a 3D format through head-mounted holographic displays, allowing multi-view from differ...

Co-designing mind-body technologies for sleep with adolescents
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:1257-1266. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTSleep is critical for well-being, yet adolescents do not get enough sleep. Mind-body approaches can help. Despite the potential of technology to support mind-body approaches for sleep, there is a lack of research on adolescent preferences for digital mind-body technology. We use co-design to examine adolescent perspectives on mind-body technologies for sleep. From our analysis of design sessions with 16 adolescents, four major themes emerged: system behavior, modality, content, and context. In light of these key findings, we recommend that technology...

COVID-19 vaccine equity and health equity conversations on Twitter
This study used social network analysis and trending hashtags on Twitter to identify trends related to health and vaccine equity during the Omicron wave. The analysis was conducted using consumer-friendly platforms/tools such as the Healthcare Hashtag Project and NodeXL. The study found that during the Omicron wave, there was a higher volume of tweets related to the more specific hashtag #VaccineEquity, as compared to the more general topic of #HealthEquity. The study also identified the top influencers for these hashtags and how they changed over time. The study proposes a combination of existing tools and approaches, inc...

Using natural language processing to study homelessness longitudinally with electronic health record data subject to irregular observations
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:894-903. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe Electronic Health Record (EHR) contains information about social determinants of health (SDoH) such as homelessness. Much of this information is contained in clinical notes and can be extracted using natural language processing (NLP). This data can provide valuable information for researchers and policymakers studying long-term housing outcomes for individuals with a history of homelessness. However, studying homelessness longitudinally in the EHR is challenging due to irregular observation times. In this work, we applied an NLP system to extract h...

Community Health Recommendations Driven by mHealth Population Surveillance Data Amongst Burmese Displaced People in Eastern India: A Pilot Usability Assessment of a Mobile Health Application for Data Collection
AMIA Annu Symp Proc. 2024 Jan 11;2023:933-941. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTWith recent increases in armed conflict and forced migration, refugee health has become a growing priority amongst those who work in global health. Refugees and forced migrants, also known as displaced persons, face barriers to accessing health services and are often at an increased risk for adverse health outcomes, such as sexual violence, infectious diseases, poor maternal outcomes, and mental health concerns. Mobile health (mHealth) applications have been shown to increase access and improve health outcomes among refugee populations. Our study aims ...

Deep Representations of First-person Pronouns for Prediction of Depression Symptom Severity
In this study, we sought to utilize the embeddings of first-person pronouns obtained from contextualized language representation models to capture ways these pronouns are used, to analyze mental status. De-identified text messages sent during online psychotherapy with weekly assessment of depression severity were used for evaluation. Results indicate the advantage of contextualized first-person pronoun embeddings over standard classification token embeddings and frequency-based pronoun analysis results in predicting depression symptom severity. This suggests contextual representations of first-person pronouns can enhance t...
