Association Between Social Determinants of Health and Communication Difficulties in Poststroke U.S. Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White Populations
CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the need for uniform measures of SDOH in prospective research and for interventions aimed at mitigating health disparities through addressing disparities in SDOH. Future research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of such strategies in diverse ethnic and socioeconomic poststroke populations.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24521419.PMID:37956702 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00232 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Relationships Between Psychological Distress and Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive Experiences of Stuttering
CONCLUSIONS: Levels of PD in PWS approximate those of the general community, highlighting the existence of psychologically distressed subgroups of PWS. Speech situation-specific anxiety had the strongest relationship to PD, followed closely by one's report of situation-specific speech disruption. To a lesser but still significant extent, PWS' frequency to which they engage in various avoidance/escape behaviors, as well as their communication attitude, predicted levels of psychopathology. These data inform diagnostic and clinical decision making, drawing attention to factors that should be attended to in treatment.PMID:3795...

Pilot Results for ECoLoGiC-Tx: A New Conversation-Level Intervention Improving Language in People With Moderate to Severe Aphasia
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides promising results for ECoLoGiC-Tx to improve language function of people with chronic moderate to severe aphasia. Generalization occurred to tests, functional communication, spontaneous conversation, and structured monologue tasks.PMID:37934890 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00141 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Characterizing Speech Phenotype in Individuals With Craniofacial Microsomia: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence supports that individuals with CFM are at increased risk of both velopharyngeal and articulatory speech differences. Additional information is needed to develop speech screening guidelines for children with CFM. Heterogeneity in study design and outcome measurement precludes comparisons across studies.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24424555.PMID:37931079 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00152 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Acoustic and Physiologic Correlates of Vocal Effort in Individuals With and Without Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia
CONCLUSIONS: CPP and mediolateral supraglottic compression were influenced by vocal effort and diagnosis of pMTD. Increased vocal effort was associated with lower CPP, particularly after vocal load, and decreased mediolateral supraglottic compression in the pMTD group.PMID:37931092 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00159 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Efficacy of a Supplemental Small-Group Early Literacy Intervention Implemented by Early Childhood Educators
DISCUSSION: This early literacy intervention package had practical benefits, with 90% of experimental group preschoolers exceeding the phonemic awareness benchmark for beginning kindergarten compared to 45% in the comparison group, for example. Providing preschool teachers with tools and support for implementing a tiered approach to early literacy intervention holds promise for producing impressive gains in skills required for children to succeed in later schooling.PMID:37917921 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00176 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)
