Orofacial Pain and Risk of Dysphagia in Women With Fibromyalgia: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study
CONCLUSIONS: In this sample of women with FMS, we identified a high rate of dysphagia risk. Also, a high percentage of these women presented alterations in QoL associated with swallowing. Patients at risk for dysphagia had significantly higher orofacial VAS and CF-PDI-total scores, supporting the relationship between dysphagia risk and COP in FMS. Further research to establish the need for appropriate assessment referrals in clinical practice to determine whether dysphagia is present in this population is needed.PMID:38118459 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00193 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Correct Information Unit Analysis in Different Discourse Tasks Among Persons With Anomic Aphasia Based on Mandarin AphasiaBank
CONCLUSIONS: Persons with anomic aphasia are inefficient in communicating discourse messages and perform poorly on all measures in story narratives. When measuring discourse information, the effects of discourse tasks and factors like aphasia severity and cognitive ability should be considered.PMID:38099824 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00217 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System for Voice Therapy: Application to Everyday Clinical Care
CONCLUSIONS: The RTSS and the RTSS-Voice demonstrated strong content validity, as they comprehensively characterized 59 therapy sessions. They also demonstrated strong criterion validity, as commonalities and differences were identified in everyday voice therapy for vocal hyperfunction across multiple clinicians. Future work to translate RTSS principles and RTSS-Voice terms into clinical documentation can help to understand how clinician and patient variability impacts outcomes and bridge the research-practice gap.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24796875.PMID:38101322 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00283 ...

"Take Us Into Account": Perspectives of Family Members of People With Parkinson's Disease Regarding Speech-Language Pathology Intervention
CONCLUSIONS: When SLPs provide families with either generic communication strategies or strategies that do not fit the individualized needs of PwPD and their families, we may inadvertently be increasing the burden on families. There is a need for systematic, evidence-based, family-centered interventions that include, but go beyond, current speech-focused interventions to meet the shared communication needs of PwPD and their families.PMID:38092050 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00273 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Speech-Language Pathologists' Approach to Alternative Access for Augmentative and Alternative Communication for Children With Motor Impairments
CONCLUSIONS: These results have implications for SLPs working with children with motor impairments who may benefit from AAC intervention. The shared framework can serve as a roadmap to other SLPs, especially those with less experience with these types of complex cases. The varying teaming approaches to support these cases are also discussed.PMID:38085653 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00129 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Online Aphasia Groups: Navigating Issues of Voice and Identity
CONCLUSIONS: Identity formed the backdrop for facilitators' actions when leading online groups, guiding decisions about who got to talk, when, for how long, through what modality, and about what topics. A better understanding of the interactions that occur online, such as how to develop and protect the identities of group members, could equip facilitators with the tools necessary for facilitating positive, engaging aphasia therapy groups online.PMID:38085656 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00186 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)
