Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2023 Nov 21. doi: 10.1152/ajpgi.00198.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe growing incidence of human diseases involving inflammation and increased gut permeability makes the quest for protective functional foods more crucial than ever. Propionibacterium freudenreichii (Pf) is a beneficial bacterium used in the dairy and probiotic industries. Selected strains exert anti-inflammatory effects, and the present work addresses whether the Pf CIRM-BIA129, consumed daily in a preventive way, could protect mice from acute colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS), and more precisel...

Cholestenoic Acid as Endogenous Epigenetic Regulator Decreases Hepatocyte Lipid Accumulation in Vitro and in Vivo
This study shows that CA as an endogenous epigenetic regulator decreases lipid accumulation via epigenetic regulation. The results indicate that CA can be considered a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of metabolic disorders.PMID:37961761 | DOI:10.1152/ajpgi.00184.2023 (Source: American Journal of Physiology. Defining a timeline of colon pathologies after keratin 8 loss: Rapid crypt elongation and diarrhea are followed by epithelial erosion and cell exfoliation
Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2023 Nov 14. doi: 10.1152/ajpgi.00140.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKeratins are epithelial intermediate filament proteins that play a crucial role in cellular stress protection, with K8 being the most abundant in the colon. The intestinal epithelial-specific K8-deficient mouse model (K8flox/flox;Villin-Cre) exhibits characteristics of inflammatory bowel disease, including diarrhea, crypt erosion, hyperproliferation and decreased barrier function. Nevertheless, the order in which these events occur and whether they are a direct cause of K8 loss or a consequence of one event in...
